TOPIC

    This second grade unit teaches students the different characteristics of mammals and birds.  The unit can easily be implemented with first grade students and younger special education students.  This unit can also be implemented when teaching fish, amphibians, and reptiles.  I have created this unit to be utilized in a classroom, but can also be done by a child at his/her individual home.  The unit will integrate Social Science, Fine Arts, and Language Arts disciplines.

GOALS

    There are several goals identified for this unit:

• Students will correctly identify characteristics of two different animal organisms      (mammals and birds)
• Students will correctly categorize each animal organism by writing or drawing
• Students will create an informational report about an animal of their choice
• Students will present a presentation about their animal
• Students will be able to listen appropriately to their peers
• Students will be able to listen and speak effectively in class discussions

    Animal Defenses                    Pictures and information about animals and the methods
                                                    they use to protect themselves.

                                                    The pictures can be used for stencils, books, coloring, etc.
