Maude's pretty granddaughter Heather (Lesleh Donaldson) arrives for a summer visit, and soon begins to hear weird, guttural moans and sobs from the padlocked cellar; before long, assorted obnoxious guests at the inn find their welcome revoked — violently. Despite a nerdy deputy's obvious crush on her, Heather is unable to convince him that evil forces are lurking beneath the Chalmers house, and she decides to investigate on her own (instead of just hitting the road like any sane individual). What she finds there will come as no surprise to anyone paying attention, since this quaint little inn is clearly modeled after a certain well-known Hitchcockian motel... Despite this obvious twist, this is not a bad little suspenser, with effective camerawork and good performances, especially from Hawtrey and Donaldson (who resembles a buxom Ally Sheedy).

KILLING ZOE-An American ex-con gets caught up in a Parisian bank heist that goes wrong in this ultra-violent thriller. Zed (Eric Stoltz), a safe-cracking expert fresh out of prison, travels to France to participate in a robbery planned by his friend Eric (Jean-Hughes Anglade). But first, Zed decides to indulge in some relaxation with a gorgeous, kind-hearted prostitute by the name of Zoe (Julie Delpy). This idyll, however, is interrupted by Eric, who leads Zed and the other criminals on a long night of drinking, drugging, and debauchery. The next day, the thieves find themselves hung over and exhausted, and the plan soon goes disastrously wrong, turning into a hostage situation. Morris, in this 90 minute film, gives us an intimate portrait of a very intruiguing and disturbed man--who some regard to be a buffoon, others, a hero--his fascinating adn eccentric everyday routine, his failed marriage, an up-close look at his electrocution equipment and his anti-capital punishment rhetoric. Though, most of the film is devoted to the Holocaust controversy, and we see ample footage of the collection of evidence for and against it, excavations of gas chambers and other European sites, interviews with forensic experts, etc. Morris presents both sides of the evidence, even Nazi documents. A beautifully done, and very artistically done film!!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD-George Romero's classic 1968 zombie-fest (shot in black and white) offers some disturbing images, even decades later. In a Pittsburgh suburb people are being stalked by zombies ravenous for human flesh. In a house whose occupant has already been slain, two separate groups of people unite and board themselves in, hoping to fend off the advancing ghouls. Through radio and TV reports they learn that radiation from outer space is thought to be responsible for the wave of zombie attacks all over the eastern United States. PENN & TELLER GET KILLED-A movie no Penn & Teller fan would dream of being without. The first time I watched it, I was perplexed by the oddball atmosphere - this movie just doesn't play like a typical movie. Subsequent viewings have increased my fondness for it, though, and I keep finding more and more humour in it. So much of the humour comes from realizing that the jokes are not just inserted to make us laugh, but are the natural product of a very bizarre world that these two performers are inhabiting all the time. As Teller in a park catches pigeons with his bare hands, Penn says admiringly, "You're getting really good at that. You don't even hurt them anymore." Anymore? What has been going on between Teller and the pigeons all these years? The film is full of these little glimpses into a very weird world.

THE PEOPLE VS LARRY FLYNT-Beautifully directed by Czech emigre Milos Forman, this insightful work ironically exposes the strange and controversial life of the publisher of the ultra-raunchy porn magazine "Hustler," Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson). The film chronicles three events that Flynt is best known for: a Supreme Court battle that made him an unlikely poster boy for the First Amendment; an assassination attempt that, ironically, rendered him paralyzed from the waist down; and his battles with Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell. The film also provides insight into lesser-known areas of Flynt's life, particularly his relationship with soulmate Althea Leasure (played shamelessly by rocker Courtney Love), a sleazy, drug-addicted wildcat who was wholly devoted to Flynt. Leasure provided the balance that Flynt needed in his incredible life up until her AIDS-related death in 1987. Edward Norton is a natural as Alan Isaacman, Flynt's long-suffering attorney; Donna Hanover Giuliani appears as faith healer Ruth Carter Stapleton; and James Carville does a turn as a prosecutor. The screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski proves to be a powerful parable that bravely explores the intricacies of freedom of speech.

REALLY WEIRD TALES-A sci-fi/comedy vhs video that is a wonderfully clever and delightfully funny collection of 3 offbeat stories: All's Well That Ends Strange, Cursed With Charisma, and I'll Die Loving. Four performers from SCTV are featured: Joe Flaherty, John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, and Martin Short. 85 minutes, 1986.

RE ANIMATOR-Based on an H.P. Lovecraft story, Re-Animator is a modern variation on the Frankenstein legend, about a couple of medical students, one certifiable, the other almost normal, who experiment with bringing corpses back to life. The nut case (Jeffrey Combs) begins to have an influence over the other boy (Bruce Abbott), and by the end of the story he has, rather ironically and ghoulishly, won him over. Like Romero's zombies, the re-animated corpses here aren't very pretty, and they tend to have superhuman strength. Once they're injected with Combs' resurrection fluid, which looks like fluorescent Gatorade, they're able to wreak havoc even if they've been decapitated. Combs' undead professor walks around with his head literally in his hands, babbling about becoming famous for Combs' discovery, while Combs tells him, "Who's going to believe a talking head like you?" The music is like a disco parody of Bernard Herrmann's Psycho score, and it helps to give the movie an air of comic dementia. So does the director, Stuart Gordon, who encourages his engaging cast to milk for all they're worth such deadpan exchanges as "He's dead?"/"Not anymore.

But up a mountain road, behind guarded gates, a terrible plot is being hatched. Professor Gangreen, a mad scientist, is turning tomatoes into perfect replicas of men and women.

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD-The story that begins where the classic horror movie "Night of the Living Dead" left off. Starring Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa. The only difference is it revolves around a group of punks, the zombies talk, and they eat brains.....on second thought it doesn't pick up where the other leaves off but it's still a great movie!

ROADIE-A roadie and an aspiring groupie try to get Alice Cooper's attention in this rock 'n' roll comedy. Rock-star cameos please early-80s nostalgists; fans of loutish humor enjoy backstage hijinks. ROLLER BLADE-This low-budget martial arts fantasy-adventure is set in LA after WW III and chronicles the battle between the wheelchair-bound peacenik nun Mother Speed and the wicked Dr. Saticoy. It seems that Mother possesses a special crystal (used in their worship of a big yellow "have a nice day," smiley face). The bad doctor and his skate-boarding goons are desperate to get it. Unfortunately, she is protected by her roller-blading beauties and he must send in a decoy in order to get it. Yes, it is as campy as it sounds.

ROMEO IS BLEEDING-Lena Olin is up to her old tricks again, as are Gary Oldman, Juliette Lewis, and Annabella Sciorra, in this twisted tale of a slightly corrupt cop and the company he keeps. Much about Romeo Is Bleeding will stick with you for a long time, especially Mona the shrieking hit-woman who ends up with one arm... Delightfully bizarre, it's a strange story. It takes you through turns which are unexpected and provides just enough action and kink to keep you watching: take for instance the "with, or without" scene. You'll know it when you see it.

ROMPER STOMPER : UNCUT-A controversial, angry, uncompromising film and the racial hatred in the world.
