Lorica Hamata

  A lorica is anorther name for cuirass.  A cuirass was originally of leather, but afterward of plates of metal or horn sewed on linen or the like.   The lorica hamata is chain mail armor made out of beaten bronze rings, either butted or rivited together.  The invention of ring armor like the lorica hamata is often given to the Celts who fought against the Romans.  It is believed that the Romans more than likely stole their design of lorica hamata from the Celts.  Originally the hamata ran from the shoulders(there was a mail shoulder guard that was worn over the hamata to protect the shoulders better), down to just above the knees, as the picture above shows.   The lorica hamata was used until just prior to the revolt of Israel against the Romans, at which point it was replaced by the Lorica Segmentata(plate armor).
  The lorica hamata is perhaps the best area protection available in Midlight, it protects from the chest down to partial coverage of the thighs.  After achieving stiff leather pterygyes, boots and some leg protection this is the next piece of armor a new comer to the city should try to purchase.  While other pieces of armor do better jobs of covering single areas, the lorica hamata is still the best all around armor you can buy.  Espicially valuable for those warriors who can't afford to carry around a lot of weight.   It will protect you from rats, bandits, thugs, hounds, brutes, however one should be wary the more combat oriented of Iridine hardly ever aim their attacks for the chest but rather at the arms, and unprotected hands.
