At the time of the second Punic war the Roman legions only used
three type of cuirasses. The Phylax, the Lorica Hamata, and the Lorica
Squamata. The phylax was the cheapest chest armor available for a
roman legionar, which was why only velites, and some very poor hastati
used it. The Lorica Hamata was used by the rank and file
of the legions, while the best defensive armor, however, was reserved for
the centurions. The Lorica Squamata was made of bronze or iron scales.
These scales look just like lizard scales (which is why squamata is used
for the reptile order) and are roughly 2 or 3 cm tall and interlock
with all the scales around it. The scales provided excellent protection
against most attacks compared with the hamata. The only real weakness
in these cuirasses was perhaps that a foe could stab upwards with his weapon,
coming under the scales and piercing the leather backing, however this
was only a danger in poorly made scale armor, since a better grade squamata
was sewed threw the bottom and top of each scale.
Only the centurions of the legions of Iridine are allowed to
wear this armor. Just like the transvex crest, and reversed scabbard,
it is a sign of their rank. Private citizens may purchase this armor,
however, in order to make it as difficult as possible the Republic army
has a contract with all armorers in Iridine, that 100% of their output
of Lorica Squamata's be purchased by the legions. This means that
a private citizen interested in this cuirass must obtain it from some foreign
power, or traveling merchant.
Lorica Squamata's are available at:
No where they must be obtained at a custom item event.
