And the Beat Goes On, Part Five: January Rain

Adriana woke with a start. It took her a few seconds to remember where she was at and how she had got there. Sitting up a bit, she gazed out the huge windows of the Monkees’ pad and watched the sun come up over the ocean. It was absolutely breathtaking.

She got up quietly, assuming that the guys were still asleep at this early hour, and walked over to the stage by the windows. Sitting softly on Micky’s drum stool, she watched the waves hit the shore and the seagulls flying back and forth. It seemed to be something she thought quite frequently lately, but not in her wildest dreams did she think she would be there at that moment.

As she sat there, she thought of home. How they had been expecting snow and how odd it would be to have a New Years Eve without it. But, there was so much more that she would have this year.

The sun was getting higher and higher over the ocean as she sat and watched, thinking about everything. Softly she hummed and stood up to watch a few children go by running after a large dog. She chuckled and sighed happily. Suddenly, she felt two arms encircle her from behind.

“Good morning,” Micky said softly, kissing the back of her head leaning on her shoulder to look out at the ocean scene before them. “Isn’t it cool?”

“It’s more than cool, Micky,” Adriana said, turning around excitedly as she flung her arms around him in a crazy hug. “I can’t tell you how happy I am to be here!”

“Hey,” Micky said, hugging her tightly back, “now there’s that wild girl that I knew was in there somewhere!”

“I just feel so, alive,” she said, pulling back and looking from Micky to around The Pad, to the outside. “It might sound corny, but there’s something about here that’s just got me so excited and happy. I hardly feel like myself.”

“Well, I hope it’s you,” Micky said, pulling her back to him, “’cause I really dig this side of you.”

“Yeah,” Adriana asked as she got closer to his smiling face. “I think that anything is possible here.”

“Me too,” Micky said, as he kissed her.

Later that night, as Adriana headed down the beach with the guys, she knew they were going to attend a groovy beach New Years Eve party just down the beach but, she had no idea what else awaited her.

After a few hours of mingling and dancing as the Monkees played the party, Adriana noticed Micky motioning to her from the side of the stage as the band got off to take a break.

“What’s up,” she asked as she reached him.

“It’s almost midnight,” he said, a huge grin plastered on his face.

“Yeah,” Adriana said with a laugh, “it happens every night…”

“I’m serious,” Micky said, leading her over to a section next to the stage where sheets had been strung over some tall poles, making kind of an outdoor room. Pulling back a couple of the ends, Micky directed Adriana inside and lit a lantern that hung in the dark corner of the “room”.

As the soft light flooded the area, Adriana was in awe as she looked around. The sheets had what seemed like hundreds of tiny silver stars and dots all over, with a small, circular cut at the top so only the sky could be seen.

“Micky,” Adriana said after a moment, her throat feeling dry all of a sudden. “What is all this?”

“Just a sec,” he said, looking at his watch. “We’ve got to start the count down.”

Standing back at the doorway with her, they counted down with the crowd. Adriana noticed Mike, Peter, and Davy getting back up on the stage and taking up their instruments.

“Five! Four,” the crowd counted.

“Shouldn’t you get back up there,” Adriana shouted above the counting.

Micky just shook his head and counted, “Two! One!”

Pulling her back inside the “tent”, Micky pointed up at the “skylight” as fireworks began to shoot off.

“Oh wow,” Adriana exclaimed softly, looking up at the bright lights.

Outside, the three remaining Monkees struck up a familiar tune, with Davy singing lead.

I give her all my love
That’s all I do
And if you saw my love
You’d love her too
I love her…

Adriana was simply struck once again as one of her favorite songs played and Micky approached her.

Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
Will never die…

“Adriana,” Micky said in a low voice, getting down on one knee.

“Wait a minute,” Adriana said quietly, looking from side to side. “What’s going on here?” “Will you marry me,” Micky said, holding out a box containing what appeared to be a simple, older ring.

“I…I…,” Adriana began, her voice hitching a bit as she looked at Micky, a million thoughts racing though her mind.

“I know it’s not much,” Micky began to ramble, looking down at the box, “but I know someday I’ll be able to give you something better. It’s been in my family for years. Nothing fancy, just a simple cut, nothing you’d find on a Gabor sister or anything. Not that you’re a Gabor, but I was just thinking that…”

Micky was cut off by Adriana quickly kneeling down and silencing him with a kiss.

“So,” Micky said when the broke apart, “does this mean..” Adriana silenced him once more.

“I just need to know for sure,” Micky said breathlessly as she broke away once more.

“Yes,” she said simply, her eyes shining.

“Alright,” Micky said, nearly throwing the small ring box in the air, but stopping himself. “Peter said you wouldn’t be able to resist a Paul McCartney tune!” “Peter, so he’s the one to blame for this,” Adriana asked jokingly as she grabbed Micky’s arm as the two sat in the sand in the “tent”.

“He helped a lot,” Micky said, taking the ring out of the box and taking Adriana’s hand in his own.

“That’s really sweet,” Adriana said, looking at Micky shyly as he slid the ring on her finger.

“It’s a perfect fit,” he said, kissing her once more.

“I guess this must mean she said yes,” Mike said from the “doorway”.

“Geez,” Micky said as the two stood to their feet to greet the guys, “can’t a guy get some privacy.”

“Not when you’re a Monkee,” Davy said, hugging Adriana. “Welcome to the zoo, Adrian.”

Peter stood silently again as the other excitedly talked.

Adriana, noticing Peter’s silence, walked over to him for a moment.

“The proposal suggestion was amazing, Peter,” Adriana said, reaching to hug her friend. “Thank you.”

Pulling back, she saw Peter’s eyes shining a bit.

“Are you okay,” she asked, her own eyes filled with concern.

“Yeah,” Peter nodded slowly. “I just wonder, ya know, if there’ll ever be someone for me to do all this for.”

“You know, Peter,” Adriana said, putting an arm around her friend and leading him back to the party. “I have this amazing feeling that there will be. Soon.”
