Competitions in foreign countries

International travel can be very exciting. But to get the most out of your international experience, there are a few things to keep in mind: Before you go...

  • Remember to get your passport at least 3 months before going abroad. Visit the website (link opens new window) to find out where you can apply
  • Try to learn the native language of the country you will be traveling to, or at least a few basic terms. ("Do you speak English?" is probably the most useful!!!)
  • If you find it difficult to learn Japanese, or Czech, or whatever, French is probably probably your next best bet. It's the official language of the European Union

    When you leave...

  • DON'T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT!!! And remember to keep it with you at all times.
  • Drink plenty of water on the plane.
  • Try to avoid jet lag

    When you get there...

  • Follow all local laws; the last thing you need is to be arrested before you compete
  • Try to save most of your sight-seeing until after the competition
  • Remember you are representing your country now; conduct yourself accordingly.
  • If you're going to sample exotic new dishes, again, save it for AFTER the competition.
