Competitions in foreign countries
International travel can be very exciting. But to get the most out of your international experience, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Before you go...
Remember to get your passport at least 3 months before going abroad. Visit the website (link opens new window) to find out where you can apply
Try to learn the native language of the country you will be traveling to, or at least a few basic terms. ("Do you speak English?" is probably the most useful!!!)
If you find it difficult to learn Japanese, or Czech, or whatever, French is probably probably your next best bet. It's the official language of the European Union
When you leave...
DON'T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT!!! And remember to keep it with you at all times.
Drink plenty of water on the plane.
Try to avoid jet lag
When you get there...
Follow all local laws; the last thing you need is to be arrested before you compete
Try to save most of your sight-seeing until after the competition
Remember you are representing your country now; conduct yourself accordingly.
If you're going to sample exotic new dishes, again, save it for AFTER the competition.
