The DeKay's brown snake is one of the smallest species of snake native to Illinois. The individual in the photo above, at approximately eight inches long, is a fair-sized specimen. It is non-venomous and rarely tries to bite. Even if it were to try to bite, it is too small to pierce human skin.
These little snakes' diet consists almost entirely of small earthworms.
