Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 is a remake of the anime cyberpunk classic Bubblegum Crisis. It is not a sequel despite the change in years, but is truly a remake. The setting and main characters remain the same (although not exactly the same!).

Thje story takes place 7 years after a great earthquake destroyed the city of Tokyo (the ruins of the old city still lie underneath the new Megalo Tokyo). The rebuilding was accomplished through the use of Voomers (called Boomers in the original BGC and most often in BGC 2040), artificial life-forms that are part organic and part machine. They were developed and are manufactured by Genom Corporation (the head of the development was Dr. Steven Stingray, the father of Sylia Stingray). They now fill many roles in modern life such as construction workers and waitresses and even do office work.

But Boomers are somewhat more unstable than Genom would like the public to know. They can sometimes go "rogue", going on uncontrolled rampages where they attack everything in their paths. To counter this threat, the ADP (ADvanced Police) was set up. Despite the use of all sorts of high-tech weaponry, including battle armor suits, the ADP do not seem very effective against the Boomers. A team of four talented and dedicated women with much more advanced powered armor suits (Where did they come from?) seem to be the only ones capable of protecting the city from the Boomer menace. BGC 2040 is their story.

And what is the meaning of the title? It refers to the situation that is as tense and fragile as the skin of a bubblegum bubble, liable to burst at any time as the situation gets worse and worse!
