Cowboy Poems

Playday in Texas

Shine your boots
Clean your saddle
Load the truck
Better skedaddle

Load the gelding
Close the gate
Hit the road
And don't be late

For the grand entry
And the shining faces
Coming up next
The barrel races

Check your rope
Shake off the hexes
Team roping's next
It's playday in Texas

Hot Trail on a Cold Night

Du ring the roundup on a cold dark night
Something occured which gave us a fright
He came forkin a buffalo hell bent for leather
Bare headed, bare chested not dressed for the weather

He jumped to the ground and ran up to the fire
Just some grub boys is all I desire.
"There's beans on the fire and coffee in the pot
You're more than welcome to all we got"
He was big as a barn and tall as a tree
He ate all the beans in a second or three
Then he reached for the coffee which was scalding hot
And drank it all down right out of the pot.

He used hot coals to wipe his hands and mouth
Jumped back on the buffalo and pointed him south.
Hate to eat and run boys but I gotta haul mail
There's a mean Texas Ranger who's hot on my trail.
