If you have anything to ask our favourite NOT READY FOR PRIMETIME PLAYER on SNL and our favourite Kid on KITH (with apologies to Bruce), ask in here.

Write a new note to him at his ID (CVEB53B), and he'll be by on Saturday at 2 PM Eastern to answer.

I've got blisters on my fingers!

Hi
Morieh,

Thanks for your note! Its funny you should ask about the tour because the five of us had a conference call this very morning on that very subject! We havn't made any decision when exactly we will do it or for how long or even where but I'm pretty sure we will will hit the road sometime this year , cause its fun to do. Re favorite character: I like em all but the one I find myself annoying my friends with the most offscreen is Darill, He seems to have staying power with me maybe because we look alike. Re Prodigy .. well I am in love with my 3 computers (2 mac's 1 IBM clone .. all girls) but when I'm doing SNL my time is pretty much eaten up, but I think I'll be back on before to long,

Mark,

I am constantly amazed at the depth of your characters. Chicken Lady could have been a very easy joke, but by exploring her frustrations, mental limitations, and alienation, you made the character both funny and touching. Could you give us a bit of background on how you developed the character, and how you managed to infuse such pathos into her, while maintaining the humor?

Thanks,
Ed Johnson-Ott

Hi Ed,

Hmmm, I don't often think about 'constructing' a character to have depth or whatever but in the case of the chicken lady the voice gave me so much detail and instant history concerning what she was all about that writing the sketches was pretty easy. I'll tell ya how it came about (it was an accident) Kevin had written a sketch about a guy who worked in the freak show at a circus who could make his nose bleed at will. At the end of the sketch he says to Bruce and Dave who have been badgering him to perform, " go see the chicken Lady shes an emotional dependent" In our writing meeting we decided that it might be fun to actualy see the chicken lady trying to lay an egg for them. So we shot it that way.

Later on I found that the voice had stuck with me and I had a line "straight outta my body and onto your plate" which made me giggle so from that I wrote the first chicken lady scene etc etc etc.

BTW I flunked Lisgar

What exactly do you represent in "Big Bucks?" Do you wear color contacts? Where do you get your talent as a dancer? I liked the sketch where you went to a g@y bar with Kevin and you say "My freind told me about this place, and he's straighter than straight." Hey, its me again, the horndog. I wanted to ask you a few more questions to prove that you actaully do talk to the little people.

1)How did you think up Sex Girl Patrol? (I love your Preacher character).

2)Do you take any pleasure in being naked? (I know many KITH fans find pleasure in seeing YOU naked).

3)Were you in anyway making fun of the cultish KITH fans in that "Daryll loves Mozart" sketch?

The Unacknowled Fan,

Mark,

Saturday Night Live has received a great deal of criticism this season about poor writing. As a newcomer to the show, what are your feelings about the writing quality of the show?

Also, how much imput do you have into the creation of sketches? We haven't seen your name in the writing credits, but Darrill popped up, as did the name of each KITH troupe member in the Strip Bar sketch. How does this work?

One quick question in two parts; any comments on the four following performance artist/comics-- Andy Kauffman, Bill Hicks, Eric Bogosian, and Lenny Bruce? Part two--- What comics really influenced you, I see traces of Monty Python and Steve Martin especially in you....although I don't see traces of Chicken Lady in anything, yet there was this old joke/bit Lenny Bruce would do about a guy who was so desperate he began sleeping with a chicken, any relation there?

I think my characters will travel with me to NYC, I don't really have plans to put them on or not, I just go with the best idea I have that week, and this way I hope to be doing both old and new characters on the show. I guess I could one day see doing a one man show but I like sketch a lot mostly because you get to act off other people so who knows? re question 4 have I ever thought.. etc etc.. sparkle etc etc..I can safely say nope not yet!

Do you practice a lot and at strange hours? I bet it's a lot of fun. I hope the show stays around for another 20 years so one day, just maybe, I could be on it.

Hi Jeffrie

1- I like SNL cause it's live, its in NYC, and there are a ton of talented people on it (I know the show is getting knocked but its just true)

2- KITH worked differently, Now I go from zero to air in six days, kids was a little more luxurious 3 weeks writing, 3 weeks filming, then editing etc etc and repeat.

3- I'd like to develop some characters, make some new friends, and then die lonely and forgotten... Ta! Mark

You really have a talent for becoming the characters you portray onscreen--did you have any previous training in acting before joining KITH?

How did you come up with the head-crushing bit? (Sorry, I had to ask!)

When you did your "nudist" sketch on KITH, did you get >>>> very many socks in the mail (or various other perverted items)????

Thanks and I look forward to seeing you on SNL each week!!

Hi Jennifer,
I don't really ever think of myself as having been trained, but upon reflection I guess I was. Firstly at the Loose Moose theatre in Calgary Alberta and then at the university there.. all by the same guy, Keith Johnstone. BTW if you ever want a good read on improvisation read his book 'IMPRPO' its really good.
Headcrusher was something I used to do all the time in bars or whatever to people I was too afraid to confront directly. The first time I did it Kevin was there and later it was he, not I, who thought it would make a good film. Lastly, Yeah I did get a ton of socks in the mail, the whole cast of 'Miss Saigon' sent me there panty hose but I never got anything REALLY perverse (sigh....)
Thanks

One of my FAVORITE sketches of your's is amazingly not one of your character sketches, although I do love them, but rather it's the one where you keep breaking-up with your girlfriends after you get what you want out of them, Kevin plays your friend, but towards the end he feels used also and hangs-up on you. My question is where did you get this GREAT idea for this sketch, did you write it, was much of it improved? I think it is one of the deepest sketches on the show, it's heavy with truth. I could even see it expanded upon, was there some reason it wasn't?

Sellers is a huge influence he went about as far as you can go as a character actor, I really spend a lot of time watching the other chameleons too like Rod Steiger, Daniel Day Lewis and older ones like Charles Laughton. Straight comedy influences would be the usual suspects SCTV, Python, Goons, SNL, Andy K, and lately the Jerky Boys (the tapes) and Abfab

Mark,

Your Mississippi Gary character is an inspiration. Do you really like blues music? In your first monologue you mentioned Mississippi Fred McDowell. Is he one of your favorites? Or did you mentioned that name for the "Mississippi" reference? I have a few blues compilation CDs where every third person seems to be a "Mississippi" someone (not that it matters, they are all good). Did you write, "Smokin' on a Night Train (Chewin' on a Jelly Roll)? That song is brilliant. I hum that tune to myself at the oddest times!

Hi Barbara,

I immersed myself in blues at the end of my first year of university when, due to my grades and my ex girlfriend, I had the blues (I also learned how to play blues harp by playing along to Muddy Waters 'Hard again' album). The night train song I jammed with Brian Hartt one day when we were hanging around the Kids in the Hall offic, I think though the idea was his!

Mark,

When you prepared to do some of your recurring characters (Tanya, the young woman with the braces, Nina, Tucker, etc.), did you have a "back story" in your head on the character? I'm probably expressing this poorly, but I wonder if you kept little personality profiles/histories on the characters to help give them added depth.

Mark,

With The Kids In The Hall, you were intimately involved in the writing, and recorded the sketches for editing to achieve maximum effect. With SNL, that's all changed. Has the transition been difficult?

Ed,

I'm not sure I would say If I gave the characters history per se but I KNEW what type of people they were, what was driving them, and what they were thinking during the sketch i.e Melanie was curious and willing, Tucker was usualy scared etc. Believe it or not its kind of nice (at SNL) to not have all the responsability in shaping the show, this way you can kind of just be a writer and actor for a while.

Mark,

Was there a "bible" for The Kids In The Hall, with basic facts about AT&Love, the recurring characters, etc?

Speaking of bibles, in the Bellini Day sketch, as well as several others, a great deal of contempt for religion is displayed. Was everyone in the troupe agnostic/atheist?

Ed,

There was never a set history for AT&Love or anything really but we did often argue about what the reality of some re-occuring aspects of the show were, and as usual, funny won out.

I think it's safe to say that no-one in the troupe was devoutly religious!

I've heard of the grueling schedule that the Not Ready for Primetime Players have in putting together the show. Could you give us a breakdown of the basic schedule for writing/rehearsing SNL each week? Conversely, what was the basic schedule for producing KITH shows? How did you decide which sketches to do onstage and which to do on film??

What is it like to do a live television show--is it intimidating or more exciting???

Hi Jen

Here is the SNL week Monday : trickle in around 3 pm, I come in earlier but I am sucky. At 6 we meet the host for a short session where we 'pitch' him ideas he might do. After we leave, some to write some to eat, some to go home.

Tuesday The writing, some work all night, I can't do that Wednesday: Cast, host and producers sit at a large atble and read the 30 - 40 written pieces, then the producers retire and pick the show Thursday: Blocking and rewrites Friday : More blocking, host monolgue and cold opening are written if none were picked on Wednesday Saturday : 1pm scene rehearsal, usualy not in show order, a hearty dinner, dress rehearsal, then a final meeting to determine whats cut, shortened or moved. Then at 1130 the god Perthonstncbsjrer takes possesion of our bodies and releases them again at 1 am. You tell me what happens ok?

The kids show was way more cyclical we wrote for a few weeks picked the films and sketches (usualy a film piece had a feel that defined it as such) rehearsals lasted a couple of weeks with each scene getting 2 or 3 workouts. We would run the studio pieces for the writers. Films were shot before studio and edited while we rehearsed. Then the whole package would be moved to our little studio where we would pre-tape inserts or whole scenes on the Mondays and tape shows wednesdays and saturdays for two weeks in front of a live audience, rolling in the film bits between sketches for their approval. THEN while we began the cycle anew we would edit the different pieces into episodes checking in with our director to see cuts while we began writing the next block. 3 blocks per year..5 years.. 110 episodes!

I just wanted to let you know that your presence at SNL is very refreshing! Personally, I think you are much too funny for the show! They are lucky to have you there. It was nice to see Darrill make an appearance (that was a genius sketch!) I hope that means we may see more of your talent on the show! I guess I also wanted to know how you feel about doing the show live (basically without editing) You seem like you are pretty comfortable with it! Also, I never see your name on the credits. And,, any future plans besides the Kids movie? Just curious. Thank you for being a guest on the *P comedy BB. You have no idea how happy everyone is to have you here!

Hi Denise,

Thanks for your note, The live TV thing is one of the main reasons I'm there, and I do like it. So far I have no firm plans for anything else casue Im hoping that we will be shooting the KITH film this summer and.... the reason why we don't get a writing credit at the end of the show is that the main cast, for some reason, doesn't get a writing credit anymore whether they write or not.

Everyone's estatic to have you here on the BB. We are all big fans of the KITH. I was devastated to see the show end, but I'm glad it ended while it still had such high quality writing and performing. You were in what I think has to be the best KITH sketch ever-- the one where Dave breaks the plate over your head. That was so great (you really had that coming!).I have a few questions I hope you will answer--

--Do you plan on staying at SNL, and if not, what are your plans?

--What was your favorite sketch the Kids ever did (I know it's hard to name just one, but do you have a personal favorite?)

--In the troupe, who knew who first, and exactly how did you guys all manage to hook up?

--Which Kid(s) did you most enjoy writing and/or performing with?

Thanks so much for coming on-line and taking all these questions.

Favorite KITH sketch? Gee ...ummm the one where darill has a band in his head, but that could change tommorow.

I knew Bruce in Calgary, Kevin knew Dave in Toronto, after we hooked up Scott came to every show and one day got up onstage and never left. None of them I wish they'd go away!

Mark-

I'm sure everyone else has already mentioned this to you, but I think you're a comedic genius, and I truly admire all your work on KITH. As a young comedy-troupe member myself, I just wanted to tell you that the Kids In The Hall, and especially your work has been by far my biggest influence, and inspiration to keep working at comedy. :)

1) What made you decide that you wanted to go into sketch-comedy, and did you always know this was what you wanted to do?

2) One of my favortie things about KITH was how all five of you had an almost scarey ability to play women so well, unlike most of the other shows, where the whole joke was that the men were simply dressing up as women. Did the five of you make a conscious decision to portray your female characters as if they were real, or did it just come out naturally once you started rehearsing and putting your sketches together?

3) Where did your inspiration for the Chicken Lady come from? We've known on here for awhile that she started in the Freak Show sketch, but I was wondering if there have been any other influences for her? The episode where she returns to her childhood home (even though it was really funny) was truly sad, and kind of made you think more than laugh about it.

4) Where did your inspiration for Melanie come from? She's my favorite character of yours, and I'm curious about where the idea for her came from.

Thanks for all your time,
Vicki

Lalane,

There is no longer any rivalry between me and Nick but when we were kids I would lure him into a quiet room and hit him. I also promised him a submarine for his tenth birthday but I didn't deliver.

My parents weren't thrilled in the begining, like when I was making $5 an hour at a coffee shop. Nowadays I think they rather enjoy it, my father even stays up to watch SNL.

The only cast member who actively resents my genius is Chris Elliot, though Im pretty sure Jeanine left because she resented my genius too.

----------------------------------------------------------

Hi, Mark!
I was lucky enough to get the opportunity of attending your performance with the rest of the Kids in Cleveland Dec. 17 and you were WONDERFUL! It was the best Christmas gift I got last year! I drove my friends crazy crushing heads for weeks afterwards. The show was terrific and you all seemed to be enjoying yourselves as much as we in the audience enjoyed watching you. Unfortunately, there were some incredibily rude hecklers in the audience and I was wondering how people like that affect your performance?

I thought you handled the situation very well (better than some of us in the audience!) but it must be frustrating. Does it ever get out of control?

I think I'll leave it up to others to ask all the serious career questions, but I'd like to know a few things about you outside of your career (nothing too personal, I hope): What's your favorite color? (Sorry, but I had to ask the stock "fan" question!) What kinds of things do you like to do for fun? Do you like to read, and if so, what do you like to read? Do you have any hobbies? I keep hearing that you're into computers, what kind of computer do you have like Darrell (how do you spell that character's name--inquiring minds want to know!), are you a 'net surfer? BTW, loved the SNL Internet sketch. Made me LOL!

Thanks in advance for taking the time to my questions. Meanwhile, I will turn towards Toronto and pray to the high and mighty comedy gods to bestow upon you a truly brilliant comedy vehicle in which to showcase your incredible talents. Thanks for keeping the laughter in my life! You're the greatest!

My Grandmother wanted me to thank you for her. I am still sad the Kids in the Hall are off the air but it is nice to see you every week on Saturday Night Live. Do you have any plans on bringing anymore Kids in the Hall characters to the show? I thought it was very funny how each stripper in the "Gay Stripper Theater" was named after a kid in the hall. Brooke,

Not at all, I think comedians tramp over the same type of themes a lot, because when you think about it there aren't that many great ones so if theres any similarities I think thats the reason. All the groups you named are genuinely experimental with what theyre doing and I think that is the way to get an individual style going (cause remember 'Fridays?'

2) Lenny Bruce had a bit/joke about a guy who was so desperate he'd do it with a chicken, any relationship here to Chicken Lady, meaning was part of the idea inspired from that act of Bruce's?

3) Will you leave SNL to shoot the film, or juggle between the two projects?

more>>>>>>>>>>> 4) Recently I was watching the classic film Apocalypse Now, and was amazed how in subtext and direction the Tucker sketch was where he hunts the mouse, was this on purpose?

5) When the Kids In The Hall film is finished, do you think you could talk Lorne into letting all of you (the Kids) host SNL, to help promote the film? I'm sure you're aware it something we'd ALL love to see!

Much Admiration,
Sebastian
You are the BEST Mark McKinney!

Hi Mark!

As a New Yorker who is in love with the city, I'm curious as to what you think of living here. How does it compare to Toronto? Finally, have you had any interesting cab rides that belong on HBO ?

Mark,
Hi. I know the KITH probably had many problems with censorship, so maybe you could give us some examples of sketches (or just premises) that we missed out in because of this. Also, was any particular Kid more likely to have problems with censorship? If I had to guess, I'd say Scott--his sketches were often shocking (which is why I love them). I mean, how often do you see a character like Buddy Cole on network TV?? I remember a sketch of yours, that did air, but a word was censored, and I've never been able to figure out what is was. You played an old woman who's bemoaning the fact that she can't use the word gay or f*gg*t, and one other word. Do you remember what the word was?? I can always figure out any other censored words (they are usually pretty obvious), but that particular sketch has had me perplexed. Your replies to all these questions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Lisa

PS--How old are you (if you don't mind my asking)? I thought I read that you were 34. Just curious. Thanks again!

Lisa,

Scott met Kurt in Toronto after a show and liked him a lot, he also had intended to invite him to our show in Seattle which happened two days after he killed himself, I think this was his way of saying he liked him.

Hola, Mark!!!!

I'm not really on this board, but a good friend of mine (Eyeshadow) has given me this groovy opportunity to speak to you. JOY!!!!! God bless her little heart. ANYWAY....I have a few questions:

1. At the end of the "Rollerblading" sketch-I hope you know what I'm talking about-who sang the little jingle at the end? I say it's you, my bro says it's Bruce. I have quite an expensive bet on this one....

2. I notice no one has asked about Nina! How did you develop her character? I say she's a perfect candidate for SNL, don't you?

3. What character did you hate to play the most?

Thank you for taking the time to read my sad little message. Let me just say that I love your kinky way of looking at things, and me being such a horndog lets me enjoy watching the shows even more. Stay be-yoo-tee-ful, and I love ya, babe!!!!

Anniie,

You win, it was my song, my rules. Nina is a character I have done lots but I still slip into her neurotic state every now and again so heres hoping she writes me a funny sketch for SNL. As for the character I hate? None of them really though I never was too thrilled at the 2 hours of make up it took to play Satan though I liked the character a lot. I got rashes alla time.

Mark,
A large number of us are trying to convince Broadway Video to start selling a Kids In The Hall Collector's series, so that we can buy ALL of the episodes in uncut, uncensored form. So far they've thanked us for our enthusiasm, but have been vague otherwise.

Any suggestions on who the best contact person at Broadway Video might be, and how we can convince them to let us give them large amounts of money (you know, this shouldn't be hard. Don't these people understand capitalism?) for the whole series?

Dear Mark,

It's been noted by many fans that lots of your characters are multi-sided, and not the one-dimensional characters often found in sketch comedy. In general, how do you go about creating a new character? Which role was the most challenging to portray, and why? And which was the easiest?

Thank you and good luck in the future,
Helen Francini

Helen,

Well with me it's always the voice, I play around with it and if it develops then I usually know how he/she /it walks thinks, and dresses. None of the characters I put on TV were really that hard to do once I'd done the homework, though sometimes I would worry about some trivial detail but that probably had more to do with just needing to worry about something!

I never shaved my legs we usualy just put on a couple of pairs of spice 'big girl' pantyhose to hide the hair. However we did have to shave our chests a couple of times which, btw, is great fun if you find yourself on a slow night.

One of my favorite sketches is one of Bruce's solo creations called-- Love & Sausages... When you were doing this sketch what was your general feeling towards it at the time? I think it could be considered as one of Bruce's best short films.. It's the second sketch I ever remember crying at the end to, the first was one with Gilda Radner during her run at SNL...

And . . . if you had to do everything over, would you change anything? Okay. those aren't the most interesting questions, but that's all i have right now. Barbara,

I invented Darill one Sunday night in New York when I was leaving Kevin & Tiffany's apt (T is his wife now) and because I could sense they wanted me on my way I stalled at the door complementing them for everything I could think of, and making them give me excrutiatingly detailed directions to the elevator etc. That was Darrill.

I love Ren & Stimpy but my favorite ones were written by John Kricfalusi who is long gone but I do watch the 'Stinky episode every couple of months and love it.... Mark
