Lake McDonald

Lake McDonald

Going-to-the-Sun Road travels along side of Lake McDonald while on its way up to Logan Pass on the Continental Divide. Lake McDonald is located in a valley that is enclosed by the Apgar Mountains, Howe Ridge, and Snyder Ridge. Howe and Snyder ridges are piles of glacial debris that rise over 2,000 ft. With an elevation of 3,153 ft, mountains in the backdrop such as 8,850 ft Mt. Vaught seem to touch the sky. Lake McDonald is 10 miles long and about 1 1/2 miles wide. The lake was formed naturally as glacial debris collected near Apgar Village to dam the water flowing out of the valley.
