Luna(Gai Den): |
Luna is an African-American girl from Harlem, described as being "hot-headed, stubborn, rough, rude, and has a one-track mind", and that's what I like about her - she's definitely a brave, tough, determined young woman who takes no crap! Not even from tough-guy Shuu/Kento! She's the strong female character that hears the call of the wild and likes to run with the pack, with her long, black braid trailing in the wind, flashing her mean, jagged-edge bowie knife through the dark streets of New York and LA. Yet she's vulnerable enough to publicly show her grief for her murdered older brother, and feel the stirrings of a romantic attraction towards Ryo Sanada, to which he feels in turn (Brooklyn Bridge scene, check out the attraction in Ryo's eyes ^_~). Yet she isn't given her due for being a very important protagonist in the OAV Gai Den. Because of a misinterpretation of events, she initially believes the Troopers were the murderers of her older brother and friends, but once she sees that she is wrong, she has the courage to admit it and assist them during the rescue of one of their brother-in-arms, Seiji Date. Still, she was smart enough to track down the Troopers in connection with her brother's death in the first place, smart enough to help Ryo and Touma escape the law, smart enough to guide the Troopers through LA, and smart enough not to fall through the trap door that the evil antagonist, Shikeisen, laid out - something that the Troopers should've been able to avoid themselves - but didn't! Luna's fatal flaw was her deep grief and need to avenge her older brother. Since she and her brother were orphans, he was the only family she knew and had in the world. So as evil and dangerous as he was, she still confronted Shikeisen who sadly, caused her death. Yet, it was her fatal intervention that created a big enough distraction for the others, and help the Troopers gain the upper hand (and get out of their SECOND trap) and finally win the day. And
even in her final moments, she died with no regrets, in
the weeping arms of Ryo. (I wished she had lived. In my
opinion, Luna and Ryo would've been perfect for each
other. They both shared a very strong sense of loyalty
for family and friends. Sorry to all you Ryo female
fans!) |
