This answer is partly wrong and partly right!

The water would be nearby so the castle could have a moat and if needed, drinking water. But most water was very polluted. Remember, there were animals that drank from the waters, and there was no plumbing. The only place to go potty after eating was in a hole in the ground. Garbage was also dumped in the moat. Such nasty water made for wonderful defense because many people wouldn't want to go through the moat!

Did you know, many castles that still stand have drained their moats so that the smelly water is gone?
