AT LEAST WE GOT ONE THING RIGHT - Todd & Starr & Blair
This goodbye scene was a real tear jerker. Todd has always been his best when he is with Starr and his affection and love for her pours out, unlike anyone else. It also is a very touching scene with Todd & Blair, even after all that has gone on with the two, Todd acknowledges that one thing good came out of both of them, their daughter. Todd is on the run after holding everyone hostage at Asa’s lodge. Blair helped him escape from the hospital and now is allowing him to say goodbye to Starr. Blair has come to the stables looking for him and Todd steps out of the shadows.
TODD: Where you been? (she jumps at the sound of his voice)
BLAIR: (crossing her arms) Doing you the favor of your life! And you better not make me sorry that I did it.
TODD: Okay, I won’t.
BLAIR: (she goes to the door and brings Starr in) Come here, sweetie.
STARR: (yells and runs to his arms, he picks her up and hugs her tightly) Daddy!!!
Scene break
STARR: (they are sitting on bales of hay opposite each other, Blair is sitting on another bale across from them, Starr is talking in mid story) And you were lost. And Mommy says, don’t worry Daddy will leave cake crumbs in the woods to find his way out....
TODD: (cuts her off, correcting her) Bread crumbs.
STARR: Mommy likes cake.
TODD: (he looks over at Blair) Yeah, Mommy likes cake alright. (Blair give a smile as if caught. He gets up, taps Starr’s forehead affectionately and goes to whisper to Blair confidentially, she stands)
Do you think I could have a minute with her.....
BLAIR: (cuts him off, she does not trust him) No! (he looks away knowing her fear is justified and she whispers, with an apology) Sorry.
TODD: (looking guilty) I don’t blame you. I thought about it. But I don’t think she’d like a life on the run.
BLAIR: Todd, I know that you would never hurt her, but I’m just gonna stay, okay? You better hurry up there’s cops all over the place, you don’t want to get caught.
STARR: (Starr looks crestfallen, he crosses back to her and puts his hand on her head then sits again) Tell me a story, Daddy.
TODD: (surprised) Now?? (he sighs) Okay. Once upon a time, there was a king, who had a beautiful daughter who was a princess and well the king did something’s that some of the other princes in town didn’t like so much. So the king had to go away cause he was scared that the other princes would kill him. And that made the daughter very sad because she was going to miss her father very much. But the king reminded her that if she ever wanted to talk to the king all she had to do was go to the pond, cause who was there?
STARR: (big smile) Fred, the magic frog! (Blair smiles sweetly at her)
TODD: That’s right. Freddy, the magic frog. And all she had to do was talk to the frog and her father would hear every word that she said.
STARR: (sadly) Are you going away Daddy?
TODD: Your Mom will take good care of you while I’m gone.
STARR: (pouting, sad) You always go. I don’t want you to.
TODD: I don’t wanna go. But this time I really have to. (he bites his lip and Blair looks like she is about to break down)
Scene break
TODD: (he gently traces her hair on each side of her face and cups her chin lovingly) Okay. Take good care of your mother.
STARR: I will Daddy. (she is very sad)
TODD: (barely holding it together) Good. (small smile to her and then he walks over to Blair) Alright, I won’t forget what you did for me.
BLAIR: You....you better go. (she is brimming with tears, her voice catching)
TODD: Yep. (he looks down) Look Blair, I know that things are all wrong between us and I know, (looks directly in her eyes, with intensity) and I want you to know, (they both look lovingly at Starr) at least we got one thing right.
(Blair is sobbing and hugs him, he closes his eyes, she touches his face and he pats her shoulder, all done with much affection)TODD: (Starr looks extremely sad, he crosses back to her) Okay Shorty, hop up there. (indicated bale of hay) Stand right there. Now I want you to close your eyes and I want you to count to ten real slow, alright?
STARR: (she puts both hands over her eyes)One...two...three...four...(he sets Fred the frog on the bale of hay where he sat)
TODD: Slower. (he slowly walks up to her putting his hand up to her face, not touching it, just an inch away, Blair is weeping openly)
STARR: Five...six...seven...eight...(he stands at the door, Blair is watching him, he looks at his daughter one last time, his face about to break but holds it back and turns and leaves silently) nine...ten. (she opens her eyes and sees the frog) It’s Fred, Mommy. (she picks it up)
BLAIR: Yes. (Blair embraces Starr with everything she’s got)
STARR: Fred the magic frog. (they both hold onto each other tightly)
