1400 Washington Avenue  Cairo, Illinois

A museum of Civil War and local history can be seen on the first floor of the Cairo Custom House.  On the second floor is the Halliday Art Gallery and individual display rooms.

Featured in this historic building are a desk used by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, an 1865 Cairo fire wagon, a scale model of the gunboat U.S.S. Cairo, and the historic Cairo Popcorn Wagon.

An architect with the U.S. Treasury Department, Alfred B. Mullett, designed the building.  The site was selected by Stephen A. Douglas, and the money was appropriated in congress by John A. Logan.
