Alicia O'Brien Day
To celebrate one classmate's love of life in her struggle with cancer, the Martino Junior High School Student Council, along with their school, helped to make May 11, 2000 known as Alicia O'Brien Day in the village of New Lenox. Below is the proposal
for the proclamation of Alicia O'Brien Day written by
them. Many of the poems that Alicia
and others have written on this webpage are ones that
were read on this day. For more information on this, click here and read some of
the newspaper articles written about Alicia O'Brien Day.
Proposal for the
Proclamation of Alicia O'Brien Day
May 11, 2000
This day of recognition is proposed because of Alicia's contributions to her school and community as a positive role model, for her poetry and artwork, and for her exemplary courage in coping with cancer.
Alicia has written and illustrated many poems. She also worked with the author, Cherie Bennett, in the creation of a recently published book, called Zink. Alicia provided valuable information on what it is like to suffer from cancer and to be a patient in a children's hospital. She also served as an illustrator for one of the chapters in the book. The author, Cherie Bennett, will visit New Lenox on May 11th, in order to take part in a special school assembly honoring Alicia.
In spite of her serious illness, Alicia always works hard and displays a positive attitude. She loves life and thinks of others before herself. As representatives of Alicia's classmates, we ask for your approval of this proposal.
Thank you"
