The Phantom Follies - Melbourne, Australia - 1992 or 1993
Rob Guest, Marina Prior, Dale Burridge, Maree Johnson, Caroline Ferrie, and more
The cast and crew of the Australian production put on skits, parodies, and spoofs for the benefit of charity.
Runs over two hours long. Quite funny, especially loved the snarky version of All I Ask of You. Some of
the skits/parodies - "Beauty School Dropout," "The Three Raoul Amigos," "A Charade," "I'm Too Sexy,"
a rock version of Il Muto, a rap/dance version of Think of Me, many more. Ripped from an old tape,
has generational issues, a few skips that were in the tape, some color bleeding due to PAL to NTSC
conversion, but still quite watchable. The "Midnight at Erik's" segment has a date of 1993, I'm not sure
if this was part of the Phantom Follies or if it's from something else and added onto this tape.
The Follies seem to be complete, the Midnight at Erik's segment cuts off when Mme. Giry is
tangoing with an Erik.

Phantom Of The Opera - Midday Show With Derryn Hinch ( Australian )
Australia - 26th July 1994
In 1994, when Phantom fever was at it's peak, the Midday Show, hosted by Derryn Hinch
filmed a special show at the Theatre Royal in Sydney.
Stars of the show include Rob Guest as the Phantom,
Marie Johnson as Christine, and Peter Cousens as Raoul.
The show covers interviews with the actors, sharing personal experiences on and off stage;
technical information about costumes, sets, and the chandelier; and four full length production numbers.
Staged production numbers include Masquerade, All I Ask of You, Prima Donna, and Music of the Night
It was videotaped off the TV. Therefore it is clearly not a commercial item, and of
course has the "chops" where the adverts were edited out. Not that you can really tell
except for the logo reappearing to let you know the show is starting again.

Not the ALW production, I believe it is the André „e La Roche version.
And it is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. My Italian's pretty rusty so I
can't really tell if they've done anything truely wacky in the backstory but the music
is weird enough by itself and the lyrics seem pretty uninspired. It manages to switch
from 'La Traviata' to modern style dance music. Mme Giry's (at least that's who I assume it is)
song is really weird, I can't even describe it properly. I can describe the descent to the lair:
voices chanting 'He is the Phantom. The Phantom of the Opera...etc' over and over with a beat
and a water dripping effect sound in the background. It is really really weird.
The video is basically all full stage shot from a real distance over than two points where
the filmer decides to zoom all the way in for about 10 seconds.

Beautiful PRO-SHOT video of this production. Picture and sound are perfect, run in from the soundboard
and so unfortunately Phantoms voiceovers, which cannot be heard unless you turn the volume all the way
up and then it's barely audible. A few seconds of MOTN, the Rooftop, and Don Juan missing. A wonderful
and unique production of Phantom. First, the chandelier is pretty much free falling. Second, both Carlotta
and Piangi are *thin* (Piangi also doesn't hit his high note during Hannibal). Third, Luis walks right into the
boat during the end of the Title Song (although I must say he covered admirably). Luis has a great voice,
but his movements are somewhat feminine and not nearly grand enough. The scenes he has alone (the
Angel) are much better. Felicidad is a wonderful actress for Christine, she really gets across her childish
nature, especially when trying to pull off his mask. She has a tendency to go sharp on her sustained notes,
though, and I somewhat loathed the way she left the Phantom at the end.
Pita as Raoul is very easy on the eyes.

A gorgeous video, this is about as close as you are going to get to a pro-shot from a non-pro.
The colors are beautiful and it's widescreen. The sound and video are a fraction out of sync for part
of the show unfortunately but I can live with that. A bit of wandering camera once in a while but the
taper follows the show pretty well. My only minor complaint would be the lack of zooms at key times -
Wandering Child is pretty much a full-stage shot. Thomas...what can I say, his acting is impressive
and his voice is pretty good as well. He's one of those who are better seen rather than just heard,
I think. Anne is okay but didn't really stand out to me. Nikolaj...excuse me a second, I think I need
my smelling salts. He's one of the sweetest Raouls ever and has a wonderful voice - perfect in the
role of a young viscount.

Digital – Master
Highlights: Breakdown follows:
Act One: Starts with Christine in Think of Me ( Missing I think the first line or so –
I almost didn't tape at all, there was an usher RIGHT beside me!) Short cut in between
TOM and Angel of Music. Includes AOM, Little Lotte, The Mirror, POTO, Music of the Night,
I Remember/Stranger than you Dreamt It, part of Il Muto (the Phantom's parts), and the entire
Rooftop. Title song is dark, of course (blurry through the beginning with odd shots when I could
get them until the boat comes out.)
Act Two: Very end of Masquerade and all of Why So Silent. Wandering Child (though it's dark,
and Buntrock keeps going into shadow – the foot of the Angel getting slightly in the way),
Point of No Return through the end of the Lair.
Curtain calls were NOT taped. The overall shooting seems to have improved. I had a lot more luck
with the title song, the AIAOY reprise, and Wandering Child than I've had on previous nights at this
venue. There's a malfunction with the Chandelier's lights on its way down at the end of act one.
Buntrock . . . has got to be one of the whiniest Phantom's I've ever heard. His MOTN is nice and smooth
(He's also got some very interesting movements during MOTN), but his Bravo Monsieur and parts
of his Final Lair make me cringe. He also flubs a few words in Point of No Return. (I'm shocked I
didn't notice it that night, but I noticed when reviewing the tape.) After he says 'Make your choice',
someone near me in the audience says the word 'Jerk' . . . probably in reference to the Phantom
(Well, the Phantom is being a jerk at that point!) Something good has happened to Pitcher at this
stop – she's actually been going good for all four shows I've seen her so far. I think, however, Lockyer's
Raoul steals the show.

New camera, better image and color quality in low light but shakier when I move the shot.
Lots of latecomers as well as ushers hunting down a flash camera in the mezz during
Act Two results in about five minutes of cover-ups, including most of the Overture, half of ToM,
half a minute of Bravo Monsieur, most of Seal My Fate, and half a (insignificant) minute of PONR.
Buntrock is remarkable, incredible acting and an effortless voice. His Final Lair is one of the
most unique I've ever seen. The only video of his Phantom. Pitcher is okay, her ToM cadenza is
great but her acting is nothing special. Rose is remarkably forgettable, snobby, overbearing,
and forgets some lines in Notes, he hadn't played the role in a long time.

Ben Cramer, Maaike Widdershoven
Runs about an hour. Filmed from behind/ the side of the stage. Also included, a three minute
costume special. Fascinating view of the show. The filmer constantly stops filming then picks
up again a few seconds/minutes later so it's quite disjointed and therefore difficult to get
a sense of the performances.
It's not always focused on the action, sometimes it's blocked by the scenery
(little of the final lair is visible), sometimes the taper is focusing on backstage details.
It's such a wonderful perspective! I'd absolutely love to have a full show filmed from this
angle because it's so intense. You feel like you're on the stage with them!

The audio is very good quality (considering the age of this recording). This is a great performance,

The "Before the Premiere" scene is also cut, when it jumps from the end of the Graveyard scene
to Don Juan. There is also a minute or two jump between the Labyrinth scene to Beyond the Lake.

out and pixelated than I would have liked, but that's relatively minor. The first act does not start until the new

What an amazing cast. I absolutely adore Meredith's Christine (although there are actually
quite a few things I don't like about her performance, the good is so good it
overpowers them!), she's so childish and innocent in her dressing room scenes and then
grows up by the end - her Wishing = wow. What a fantastic interpretation. There are so
many little nuances in her performance that just scream 'Christine' to me, I love her!
One little element that I just love is at the mirror bride where, after the doll is
unveiled, she starts to walk towards the Phantom before then turning to the bride. I've
been dying for a video of her for ages so I was ecstatic when I got this and not one bit
disappointed (apart from the irritating heads, Iwanted to give their seat a good kick by

Missing most of the Entr'acte, and part of the Prologue. Nice clear shots, but mostly
mid-range zooms. Occasional head in the way, but I feel I did a good job of shooting
around it. Slightly shaky in some points as it was only my third tape. The only video I

the end of "Stranger" with only minor cuts. In "Il Muto" Only the Phantom's parts are included.
Rooftop runs from "All I Ask Of You" through to the chandelier crash. Act two begins with the Phantom's

Phantom of the Opera - Toronto 1995
Cris Groenendaal, Teresa DeZarn, David Rogers
HIGHLIGHTS, 60 minutes. Supporting cast seems to be the same as in the Peter Karrie highlights, but I
need to do some more comparing. Good quality for its age--other than a little snow at the bottom and
being a bit dark, there's little color washout, facial features are clear, and the sound is good.
Groenendaals voice is warm, he just floats those higher notes. His physical performance matches his
voice--he has a great build for the role, nice and tall (cuts a dashing figure in his Red Death costume, I
might add ;-D ). Teresa is a pleasure to listen to, and her acting is just as good. David is a pretty good
Raoul, as well.

David Hunerjaeger, (u/s) Valentina Kozhanova (u/s), Kyle Gonyea, Eberhardt Neitzel,

Only boot with Hunerjaeger in the title role known to exist - he usually played Firmin.
The video's edges are fuzzy (especially on the left and bottom) and there is the slightest bit of colour
bleeding. There are lots of good zooms and the tape is remarkably steady. No cover-ups and virtually
no head obstructions. Occasional remarks from either the taper or someone sitting quite near him/her.
Scenes that are often dark (example, the Phantom during Il Muto) are well-lit and quite viewable. Starts at
the auction scene. Cuts off after the chandelier crash mid-laugh. The first act was taped on the left side of
the theatre with the second act being taped on the far right side of the theatre (which results in a little
obstruction, nothing major)

Phantom Of The Opera - Vancouver Canadian Tour - 1991
EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS Jeff Hyslop, Patti Cohenour(us), Byron Nease. MOST of Act I,
missing Prima Donna, the Il Muto Ballet and the Rooftop but includes part of the Reprise.
Resumes immediately before Wandering Child, then jumps to PONR, missing Down Once More,
but has complete Final Lair. Details and facial features are quite good for its age and there doesn't
appear to much gen loss. The only thing is that the video is basically black and white and sometimes jumps.
1 DVD C
Phantom of the Opera - Tokyo - 1988
Masaka Ichimura, Ryoko Nomura, Yuichiro Yamaguchi
Beautifully shot on a tripod with lovely close ups. Amazing quality for such an old video, there is very little
gen loss considering its age. Though the picture can be a bit flickery it's better than many videos from the 90s!
Sound appears to be from the soundboard and so is generally very clear and immediate although there are
some fluctuations and moments of distortion and unbalancing. Not wild on Masaka's Phantom - though I like
his trembly hands at the kiss! Few actors manage to do trembly hands convincingly and visibly without looking
ridiculous. Ryoko is such a sweet Christine and Yuichiro makes a great Raoul. Not this cast's day for technical
difficulties though! The boat stops moving halfway through 'Down Once More' so the Phantom and Christine
get out and walk through the lake, only to have the boat follow them a minute later! They then run into a lair
with sinking candles and still lowering portcullis and moving furniture! Then to add insult to injury, the doll gets
caught on the throne during the final lair!

One of the best videos out there, shot from third row orchestra and therefore has incredible close-ups,
looks like a lap shot. Some heads as a result but they almost never get in the way.
No video during Overture or first half of Title Song. Hard to see the Phantom during the Reprise
because of the angle, and first act ends before the chandelier falls. JOJ is on fire obviously, especially
his Final Lair (though I'll never like his hand movements). The most interesting person in the cast in my opinion,
though, is Rohan. Incredible voice and presence and looks like his Phantom would be quite wonderful.
Much better ensemble performance in general than 10/15/04, especially from Rachel who seems much
more comfortable on stage than before.

HIGHLIGHTS, runs about 70 minutes. Sometimes listed as Tampa, but the tour was in
Fort Lauderdale on 11/30/2000. Fuzziness, muted colors, and spotlight washout.
Nice and bright during dark scenes, though. Shooting is steady enough but the camera
wanders a lot with some extended shots of backdrops. Mostly full stage or mid zoom shots
with some great close-ups (especially of Keegan) that solves the otherwise constant spotlight washout.

Phantom of the Opera - CUE TAPE Netherlands - 1993
Henk Poort, Joke de Kruijf, Peter de Smet.
Minor generation loss. You hear how all the cues are given during a show.
This was not taped in colour because there are no real colours. Not really
a show to sit and watch but an interesting record - though unfortunately I
can't really understand it!
Very rare.

Phantom of the Opera - Scheveningen, Holland - 1993.
Henk Poort (Phantom), Joke de Kruijf, Peter de Smet
Full show, including curtain call and exit music. Some video problems for Why have you, Close-ups quite
blurry at times. The better of only two known videos of this cast, the other one was filmed by a production camera
and has no zooms. Shot from a tripod, and the taper knows the show very well probably a production vid. Poort
is incredible: I thought his acting was a little stiff when he first appeared, but he loosens up by the end to deliver an
absolutely heart-breaking Final Lair. Kruijf has one of the best voices ever and this video doesn't do her justice.
There are some different choreographies not seen in the American version, lets just say that PONR is a lot steamier
than what you see on Broadway.

Phantom of the Opera - Queensland, Australia - April 22nd 2008
Simon Pryce, Ana Marina, Alexander Lewis
Missing "Magical Lasso" in the first act, sometimes a tiny, tiny bit shaky,
but absolutely beautiful closeups and picture.
Have my own thoughts on Simon after seeing him live, let people
decide for themselves, Ana is just wonderful, and Alex has more
personality for the role of Raoul than John Bowles did, of whom
he took over the roll, I seen both of them live, and John is a little bland.

Phantom of the Opera - Stuttgart - May 23rd 2004
Thomas Schulze (alt), Maike Switzer, Carsten Axel Lepper, Ernst van Looy, Jonathan Agar, Barbara
Gray Nystrom, Gabriele Ramm, Marchello Ronchietto, Katie Wood
Final performance in Stuttgart. Sporadically shaky taping. The color palette also seems rather limited to
blues and greens but makes up for it with the most amazing zooms I've ever seen with nearly no digital
distortion. Auctioneer's speech skips from Strange affair to Illumination, a bit of Notes II, and most of
Wandering Child missing. Constant head obstruction but does not block anything major except Christine
handing the mask back.
No picture and sound gets muffled during first half of title song, where taper apparently got tired of
trying to find the actors and stuck the camera under a jacket. Great closing night ad-libs Madame Giry
compliments the ballet girls after ToM, Raoul shouts Mamma Mia! (the show that would replace
Phantom) after Little Lotte, Carlotta makes up a cadenza in Il Muto, Christine rows the boat at the very
end and one very very special (and gut-wrenching) ad lib following the Final Lair I will say no more.
Schulze is *incredible*, intense and passionate as any good German phantom is with an effortless voice
moving from baritone to tenor with ease: I've decided I prefer Bourgs voice and Schulze's acting. He also
gets down on his knees during Say you'll share I hadn't heard many good things about Switzer before
but I really liked her in this performance. The only thing was she seemed too mellow for Christine, she
didn't get much of her childish nature through. Her voice is incredible though, and she really shows off in
the ToM cadenza. And I adore her final lair, such true indecision. Lepper is a good but not incredible
Raoul he also looks a little funny. Includes the longest curtain call I've ever seen, 15 good minutes of
applause, and Schulze's speech.

Ernst-Dieter Suttheimer (alt), Colleen Besett (alt), Timothy Breese (alt), Dietrich Hergt, Horst Reeh (u/s),
Linda Healy (alt.), Claudia Rose Golde (u/s), Sergio Lombana, Eva-Maria Weber (u/s)
Description: Shot from right box, and some of the stage left action is blocked but it's saved by great close-ups.
Some flickering into b&w but otherwise, gorgeous picture and color for its age. Sound is fed in through the
soundboard so some of the Phantom's voiceovers as well as the monkey music box are inaudible. Last show for
some performers (Suttheimer, Breese, Golde) they get flowers in the end. Performances...Suttheimer has one hell
of a voice, smooth and delectable, but his acting does absolutely nothing for me. His performance is stiff overall,
he takes twice as long as necessary to sing some things, and he is over the top at all the wrong moments (his little
temper tantrum dance during Final Lair had me laughing out loud). Besett is non-expressive; Breese is the strongest
of the trio. Besett does do something interesting though...during AIAOY, *she* is the one who first kisses Raoul and
then pulls him into an embrace, perhaps a parallel to the final lair kiss later.

Phantom of the Opera - ( Other information not known )
Dale Tracy (alt), Colby Thomas, Ray Gabbard
A ton of gen loss. Constant flickering between saturated colour and black and white every second -
though this is steadier at the end of the show than the beginning. Very grainy picture, facial features
are hard to pick out. The picture is all over the place though it does grow steadier by the end of the video.
The sound is quite good though and it's worth it to see Dale who's fantastic

PRO-SHOT.
Different to the March 2004 monitor video. Single camera full stage shot with no
close ups with soundboard audio. Cast other than Carsten Lepper are my guesses,
Carsten was already labelled though I'm not sure if it's right. Very slight gen loss,
colours not as vivid as could be. Can never really make out faces as camera is too
distant and there is spotlight washout. Fabulous to watch for the sets and choreography.
Have watched this and its defiantly Roy.

Phantom of the Opera - Toronto - 1991
Colm Wilkinson, Rebecca Caine, Byron Nease ( Patti Cohenour )
51 minute choppy highlights - very Phantom and Mme Giry focused. A bit of snow at the
bottom, colours are washed out, occasional skipping, and the picture varies between dark and overbright.
Other than that, the picture is clear for its age and there are no obstructions. Nice balance of steady wide
shots and zooms. Picture only for most of the AIAOY Reprise. I'd expected to like Colm more than I did-
I didn't find he cared much about Christine and he felt a bit contrived to me. I didn't like Patti's acting - very
typical mesmerized, wide eyed- but the highlights don't really show enough of her to judge completely

The Phantom of the Opera opens with a stately dream ballet between our young
heroine, Christine, and her intended love. The mood quickly changes though, as she
falls prey to the mad Victorian Phantom and his oozing, sinister charm. Closely follows
the original novel, and a bright musical score that ranges from pop to musical comedy
styling, the Hirschfield Theatre has created a dramatically new Phantom
Has it's moments, not sure if I like this version or not, still making up my mind !
