Anthonette Matloka Grzymalski (circa 1926) |
Anthonette Frances Matloka was born on February 11, 1907, in Chicago. She was the third daughter of Tomasz and Franciszek Michalski Matloka. Her older sister, Mary, was born in Poland in 1901, Stanislawa (Stella) in Chicago in 1903, and Helena, also in Chicago, in 1913.
Anthonette, who preferred to be called Ann, attended St. Barbara Grammar School until the seventh grade, when she had to leave school. In those days, children left school early to help support the family.
Ann's mother, Franciszka, died in January of 1917, when she was just 10 years old. She was raised by her father and her grandmother, Marianna Michalski. Her mother's sister had died in 1915 and her cousin, Marie Bartula, had also become part of the household.
She saw her husband, Stephen, for the first time when she was just 14 years old. She did not meet him, though, until 1926. They married on June 22, 1927. They were married until the day he died on April 20, 1952.
Ann passed away on March 7, 2001, at the age of 94. Her descendants numbered 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
