Time moves on, yet I remain still
Caught up in the memories of yesteryear.
Days pass, moments spent, but I cannot recall 
Has it really been two years after all?

Still waiting for the time, that the longing subsides
To other bereaved parents I confide. 
Realization hitting hard, reality setting in
You are never coming home again.

They speak of that bend in the road
That corner that I will turn
When the pain will soften
But of this, I have yet to learn.

Stuck in the sands of time
I take a step or two
Only to fall back nine
As my heart remembers you.

Daily I face, the emptiness of tomorrow
Caught up in unspeakable sorrow.
Searching in vain for the words to express
The ache of my heart, this lasting loneliness.

My son, my child, my heart
Cast your light unto the dark
Time moves on
Yet I remain still.

Though we are told that time will soften the pain, there is always a part of the heart that will remain dark and barren. I think it is as important to give reverence to that part of us, as it is to learn to go on without our child. Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to get better, that we forget to honor just who we are now in this present time and space. It is okay to go to the dark place, for we won’t stay, but sometimes we need to visit to remind ourselves how very far we have traveled. It used to bother me when I would write poetry that was not hopeful and inspirational, but my thinking has changed. We need to recognize and honor the dark lonely parts as well, to really become whole and to be able to live in honesty and truth. So let us not deny the sad days, the lonely and desperate days, or the dark days as I call them. I hope with all my heart that your dark days become fewer and fewer, but when they do come, sit and listen, for they will not be denied. They are now a part of who you are.
