How
does one begin to tell a friend?
How
deeply they have touched one’s heart
So
many lessons learned, and memories shared
Wouldn’t
even know where to start.
We
forged the battles of life, together you and I
Oh
the laughter we shared, and tears that we cried.
Years
spent together, a bond of friendship grew
That
even miles between us, never could undo.
When
you moved away, all those many years ago
I
was never able to say to you, please don’t go.
I
was losing my dear friend, or so at least I thought,
But
the miles they made no difference,
we
were friends of the heart.
Our
friendship tied in heartstrings, never to unravel
No
matter what the road we found to travel
Walking
hand in hand, heart to heart
My
treasured friend, right from the start.
We
watched each others children grow
Shared
our grandchildren, with pride
Found
peace and happiness in our lives
Our
tears we thought had dried.
Now
we face the battles of our lives
Making
all the rest seem so small
Our
health and our children, we have found
To
be the most precious of all.
So
together we will stroll yet again my friend
Through
these journeys of our later years
We
will continue to smile and laugh
And
brush away each other’s tears.
One
day at time, we will face tomorrow
With
courage in our hearts, though filled with sorrow
For
today is all we have, so find joy where you can
And
remember, always, I will never let go of your hand.

poem was written to my lifelong friend, Rita, upon hearing of her battle
with cancer. Though we both have sorrows that are different, through these
trials,we have learned that we have a wellspring of strength we were
never made
aware of before. Together we will see each other through, as we have
seen each other through all the stages of our lives. I pray for her rapid
and complete recovery, as she prays peace and comfort for me. With God's
continuing mercy, may we both triumph.
