Elgin still needs
to take Responsibility

By. Richard Faykosh

Yes!
It's another year for Trinity news, and us and once again we are on the subject of a homeless shelter. Everyone has an opinion of what it should be. And what it should do. Some say a shelter to house them from the cold, Others say to be a referral center, but it should be a pentacle of all the things talked about. And Funding could and should be shared by all. We need a place for the homeless to spend the cold nights, But why not it being a place where counseling from many problems as well. Instead of coming in and setting up there beds and taking a shower and watching the TV, Why not do some counseling one on one? To find out what each person really needs as the Alternatives did years ago, Then each counselor goes ahead and locates the things that would help this person the best, And work to get them up and out of being homeless. If it’s a family, Then why not get things going to get them into some housing and get the children back into school. If the problem that needs to be addressed is substance abuse. Then get them into a counselor or get the counselor there to get them on the program. And began the healing. For me when I was homeless, All I really needed was an educational program. That I could not qualify for because I was homeless. I had to come up with some cold cash to pay for the program. KdK at that time. But the problem is a lot more, then just this there is a deep problem. And these people are afraid to take the risk of opening the can of worms and do something about it. But we need to address it in the next few months.

Is Our Thriving Society Mindful of Our Homeless Populace?

November 6, 1997 Part #5

Thriving Society/Homelessness

BY Dawn Johnson

Some have purposefully become inebriated so they would be placed in jail so as to receive, at least, a warm cell and a sandwich or a hot cup of coffee. Local laws have now been changed whereby being publicly intoxicated is not a crime for which incarceration is mandated. So we further perpetuate this cyclic problem. We either need more homeless shelters or one large enough to facilitate the growing population.

An awe-inspiring Pastor, Tommy Barnett, founder of the Dream Center in Los Angeles, California has set a perfect example of what can be done when people unite with a common purpose and reach out to those less fortunate. This journalist wrote over one-hundred letters to Priests, Rabbi’s, Ministers, and Pastors across the United States asking the clergy for suggestions on what they thought could be done to effectualize a solution for Elgin P.A.D.S. and our homeless. The only response came, after one month, from Pastor Tommy Barnett and the Los Angeles International Church. One book, an autobiographical, step-by-step account of the development of the Dream Center, entitled: "Enlarge Your Circle of Love." (If you wish to obtain a copy, please call 213-207-2750, and request the book.)

Not without many of the difficulties and perhaps more oppositions, the Dream Center, previously the Queen of Angels Hospital now seats 15,000 indigents at Thanksgiving. Los Angeles is a vital city whose population has exceeded nine million people at the beginning of 1996. The Dream Center was listed for sale at the price of $16 million. The estimated replacement value was actually $100 million. When they accepted the challenge to acquire this facility they were able to purchase it at $3.9 million. Nine buildings, including the main hospital were included in the negotiation, encompassing 400,000 square feet, fourteen hundred rooms which could avail themselves as housing for 5,000 guests, each room with a private bath.

Their staff consists of clergy, nurses, doctors, counselors, therapists, AIDS hospice, educators, and a multitude of servants of humanity who need support and services. Many of the "guests" are now staff with great futures ahead of them due to the outpouring of love from caring individuals united with one common purpose and cause. The Dream Center has programs for healing the alcoholic, drug-abuser, unwed mothers, orphans, elderly, gang-mentality, criminal-activity. In short, all of the ills of humanity are confronted and cared for by this great hallmark of Love.

Some of the Los Angeles International Church’s accomplishments, aside from the initial founding of the Dream Center, include providing food for up to 150,000 people on a weekly basis; provide handbooks to help neighboring communities start their own local food pantries; have begun a home for unwed mothers, to mention a few.

Networking with people who have the sincere desire to assist our afflicted benefits both sides of the equation. People are the key to the dissolution of dis-ease, poverty, hunger, pain and suffering.

If one man, with a vision, such as Tommy Barnett, can network as he did, in Los Angeles, California and develop the Dream Center, we citizens of Illinois should be able to help Elgin.

It has been said that each of us within the middle class are only one to two paychecks away from homelessness every month, without the threat of tornadoes, earthquakes, or any other "act of nature". Come forward with your hearts, Illinois…..Having mindful awareness simply equates to: care, be concerned and take action!

Bob Zackery

By Richard Faykosh

I would like to tell you about Bob, He was a very nice guy and this is our first Homeless story of the New Year. Bob lived in an apartment in the area with his wife. It was a very slow year and it would seem that it would not get any better for the family. Bob had a regular job and at times the money he made was a bit thin. But they did make the bills. As the year went on it seemed that things would get better but they actually got a bit worse. The rent went up as well as some of the other things that Bob used at work, He had to drive a distance to work and that did cost money to and from work. (But you will say that you have to do the same thing) True! But Bob knew that he had to put in so many hours a day to pay for the gas as well as the food he ate and the cost of the bills that day. He had divided all his monthly bills into a daily cost sheet. To make it at the end of the month he had to do so many hours that week. And had to cut traveling cost, So when overtime was offered, His first words were how many? Bob is one of our one paycheck from being homeless people. And he could become another face on the street. And he knew it. But Bob knew as long as he was able to get the hours he would be doing okay. He still looked for more work. Hoping to find a better paying job that would launch him to a better pay bracket. That comfort zone where he could be able to put a little away for emergency. But that did not happen. Before the year's end his striving was dashed. He was laid off, and this was a real mental strain to him and to his family. (To Be Continued)

POEMS OF THE STREET

POEM # ONE

THE WAY LIFE IS

BY STEVE HARPER 2/7/01

AS I WAKE UP,
I FACE ANOTHER DAY.
TO LIVE AND STRIVE,
EVEN TO FACE THE SAME,
PEOPLE THAT I SEE EVERY DAY.
AS I WAKE UP,
I LOOK AROUND ME,
TO SEE WHAT I FACE TODAY.
BUT TO MY SURPRISE.
I FEEL TOTALY DIFFERENT TODAY,
I FEEL AS IF I COULD DO ANYTHING IN THE WORLD.
SUCH AS LIFT UP THE HEAVEST WEIGHTS.
OR PUSH A CAR A MILLION-MILES.
JUST TO SEE WHAT I CAN FACE TODAY.

POEM # TWO

SOMETIMES

BY K.J.

SOMETIMES I LOOK AT THE SKY AND MAKE FIGURES. BUT JUST SOMETIMES.
SOMETIMES I SIT AND PRAY FOR LIFE TO STAY FOREVER FOR ME. BUT THAT’S JUST SOMETIMES.
SOMETIMES I LAY IN MY BED AND DREAM OF HOW MY FAMILY WOULD BE TOGETHER. BUT THAT'S JUST SOMETIMES.
THIS MORNING AND EVERY MORNING.

I WAKE UP A WARD OF ILLINOIS.

AND THAT'S

ALL

THE

TIME… :-(
