PC Build

So after 5 years of only having laptops I decided that I would build my own PC.  I wanted something that was easily upgradeable, could handle some pretty hardcore gaming if ever I got in the mood, and have a large enough disk space to hold a ton of mp3s and movie files.  Well after much research, a few days of assembly and about $700 I had my wish.  This is that story.

 Parts

Case - Raidmax Smilodon ATX-612WBP Mid Tower w/ 500W Power Supply - Cost: $60 (after $20 rebate)

The first item I needed to build my PC was a case to hold everything.  I either was going to try to pick up one of those old full-tower cases you'd see in an elementary school but after looking at some prices and seeing just how bad-ass this case looked, I had to pick it up.  It only cost me $60 (after a $20 rebate) and it saved me a ton of time when I wanted to install the motherboard and drives.  It has a removable motherboard tray, two side wing-doors, and uses plastic clips rather than small metal screws to hold the drives in place.  It also comes with a small tray to hold extra parts that fits snugly under all the drive bays.

It came with a 500W power supply that is more than enough to support my graphics card and a dual-core CPU.  Airflow and cooling wouldn't be an issue as the case comes installed with a 120mm front intake fan, two (2) 80mm side exhaust fans (after flipping one around as for some reason the case had an intake fan installed right above an exhaust fan) and a single 80mm rear exhaust fan.  I went out and purchased an additional 80mm fan and installed it on the right front side, where there was a fifth fan slot, (Yes, this case was loaded with space for fans) to provide additional air intake.  I also added some blue LEDs to the rear fan with a power switch allowing me the option to locate and use the rear connections easily in any situation. The case already has side and front blue LEDs installed and when combined with the rear LEDs and the green CPU cooler LEDs makes the whole case light up pretty nicely, especially in a darkened room.  My only quip with this case is the front door.  The case has two (2) front USB and two (2) front audio jacks that can only be accessed when the door is open, making them only accessible temporarily.  Other than that this case was well worth the money.

 

 

Motherboard - MSI k9N4 SLI-F NF500 w/ AM2 Socket - Cost: $105

The biggest concern I had while researching what I wanted was compatibility.  It is most vital to make sure that your motherboard has all the essential components to house the devices you want.  PCI, PCI-Express, AGP, type and number of memory supported,  CPU Socket type, SLI ready, onboard audio and form factor are all important specs I had to deal with once I decided upon this motherboard.  This MSI Motherboard supports AMD Processors (also called CPU) rather than the more popular Intel Processors most store-bought PCs.  The MSI Motherboard supports a wide variety of AMD Processors and is equipped with two PCI-Express Slots and 2 PCI Slots, is SLI-ready, supports up to 16GB of RAM (memory) and has four serial data ports (for SATA HDD).  It has its own onboard audio (Realtek ALC850) and its form factor is ATX.  A few notes about all this confusing madness:

Form factor concerns the motherboard's compatibility with the case.  Smaller cases (like the mini-tower) that are micro-ATX require a micro-ATX compatible motherboard.

PCI, PCI-Express x?? and AGP Slots all concern devices like in-case modems, in-case wireless modems, TV-tuners and (most importantly) graphics and audio cards (referred to as I/O Devices).  The AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) was used primarily in the early/mid-90s for the *duh* graphics card connection and PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) peaked at the same time but supported other I/O devices.  However, as technology often does, speed and performance have increased, resulting in the PCI-Express Slot.  Around 2004/2005 AGP and PCI Slots began a phase out in favor of the much faster PCI-Express Slots -- in fact, the PCI-Express Slot operates approximately 70 times faster than the original PCI Slot.  PCI-Express slots come in four varieties: x1, x4, x8 and x16.  The greater the lanes, the larger the connection port, thus the greater peak bandwidth.  The MSI Motherboard I chose has two PCI ports (two long white slots at bottom left) and two PCI-Express x16 ports (the two long yellow slots right above the PCI Slots).

SLI-Ready refers to the ability of the Motherboard to connect two identical graphics cards through either the PCI or PCI-Express slots.  Why would you want to do this you might ask?  Improved graphics cards emerge on the market approximately every 6 months and are ridiculously priced, mostly because they are made to intensify the experience of the most recently released games.  Well, by using two identical (though slightly older and thus cheaper) graphics cards your PC will be able to divide the graphics workload between the two, resulting in smoother graphics and better 3D visuals.  Its something I would like to try in the future, once my current graphics card reduces in value.

Audio comes standard on most motherboards, but when choosing a motherboard make sure to take a look at the type and quality of onboard audio and your own personal needs.  If you desire stronger, three-dimensional audio for hardcore gaming you may want to purchase your own audio card with such capabilities.  As for me, the Realtek ALC850 onboard audio is more than adequate for my 6 Channel Surround Sound System.

CPU Socket Type merely refers to the type of processors (CPU) the motherboard is capable of handling.  I wanted room here to upgrade and the MSI motherboard gives me room to upgrade my processor in the next few years if I so desire.  The CPU Socket is the large white perforated square at the top center.

Memory is another section where you need to view compatibility issues before making a purchase.  Make sure to check out what type (DDR2, DDR3, DIMM) and the Mhz and the amount of memory the motherboard can support.  The DIMM Slots on this motherboard are the orange and green slots located on the top right of the motherboard.

 

 Processor (CPU) - AMD 64 X2 4000+ Dual Core 2.1Ghz AM2 Socket - Cost: $70

 Heatsink/Fan Combo - Zalman CNPS 9500 AM2 Socket - Cost: $35 (after $25 rebate)
 

When choosing a processor I was looking primarily for one that was dual-core, making it both fast and capable of a large workload.  I found all this with an AMD X2 processor.  Again, the most important thing when looking for a processor is to make sure that it is compatible with the motherboard (AMD processor for an AMD motherboard; Intel for Intel).  Of course, with such a powerful and fast processor I wanted to make sure that I could keep it at an ideal cool temperature (30-35 degrees Celsius).  Any modern processor must be installed with an accompanying cooler or heatsink/fan combo.  A processor without a means to draw away heat will burn up hours after turning on the computer. 

The processor came with its own factory heatsink/fan but seeing as I didn't want to take any chances, I also picked up an additional (and more powerful) heatsink/fan combo.  Zalman has been around for a while and makes high quality products.  This one is specially designed to be used with the AMD 64 X2 4000+ Dual Core Processor.  When purchasing a separate heatsink/fan combo make sure that it will be compatible with the processor, will fit with ample room inside the case, draws correct amperage and wattage from your power supply and comes with thermal compound (or you might want to buy some Arctic Silver 5, a higher quality thermal compound.  A $5 tube of 2 oz. will be more than enough).  Combined, my processor and Zalman heatsink cost me around $110.  

 Hard Disk Drive (HDD) - Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0 Gb/s - Cost: $80

 A ton of space that reads fast and uses Serial-ATA to move data quickly and at high volumes.

Graphics Card - EVGA GeForce 7900 GS GDDR3 256MB PCI-Express SLI-Ready - Cost: $120 (after $30 rebate)

 A mid-range card that provides great graphics for the price.  Plus it's SLI-ready, meaning I can go out and buy a second in 6-12 months (at a cheaper pricetag) and still keep up with newer more graphic intensive games.

Memory - 2GB (1GBx2) G-Skill DDR2 800 PC2-6400 - Cost: $85 (after $40 rebate)

I went with a semi-cheap brand of memory, but 2 gigs for 85 bucks is too good a deal to pass up.  And it's more than enough RAM for my needs.  My motherboard can support up to four sticks of RAM.  The highest value stick I've seen is a 4 GB stick.... so I definitely have room for an upgrade here.  As with anything, you want to check the type of memory supported by your motherboard and also check the voltage the memory accepts and compare that to your power supply.  

Optical Drive - LiteOn 20x SATA DVD Writer - Cost: $35 

This DVD Writer allows the ability to write/read CDs like a normal CD-ROM but also reads and writes DVDs at amazing quick speeds.  And since my motherboard supports SATA connections (4 plugs) I decided to splurge the extra $10 bucks and get a faster drive.

Floppy Disk Drive (FDD) - Cost: $15

Since I occasionally may use 3.5 inch floppy disks I decided to add a floppy drive to my PC.  The drive itself only cost me $7 but I had to drive to MicroCenter and buy a FDD Cable to connect it to my motherboard.  

Operating System (OS) - Microsoft XP Home Edition OEM Version - Cost: $90

 Simply put: Vista is crap.  It has way too many bugs and is incompatible with almost everything out on the market right now.  I've used XP on all my other laptops and I'm used to it.  Just a note about the difference between the OEM version and Retail version of an OS. OEM=just the disk and you must also purchase an item of hardware with it (this is because the OEM version is meant to be only for first-time install on new computers). Retail=Fancy Box/Packaging and a detailed instruction manual, plus it costs about 25% more than the OEM version.

The First 100 Hours
Just a Quick Update of what the new Congress has passed withing the first 100 hours.


Spending Bill -- Friday, January 5
Congress voted to enforce budget restrictions under the PAYGO Rule, which essentially stops deficit growth by allowing no new spending if it would add to the deficit. If additional spending or tax cuts are to be implemented, there must be corresponding cuts in government spending or tax increases to account for the rise in the deficit. Now Bush will unlikely be able to extend his tax-cuts-to-the-rich program.

Security Bill -- vote expected on Jan 9 or 10
A vote to uphold all the 9/11 Commission's recommendations and implement all recommendations, not just the select few implemented by the Republican Congress.

Lobbying Bill -- voted and passed 430-1 in the House on Jan 4
Bill bans lawmakers from accepting gifts, free trips and discounted flights from lobbyists. A critical first step in reducing political corruption within the Congress.

Minimum Wage -- vote expected Jan 9 or 10
A bill to ensure a raise in the minimum wage by restricting a pay hike in Congressional Pay... essentially no raise for our Congressmen unless there is a raise for the working American.

Higher Education
House voted expected on Jan 17 to reduce interest rates (by roughly 50%) on student loans in order to increase college graduate numbers.

Health Care
House vote expected on Jan 12 or 13 to lower prescription drug prices for seniors.

Energy
House vote expected on Jan 17 or 18 to cut multibillion-dollar subsidies for big oil companies and increased funding and support for renewable and alternative energy sources.


All I can hope is that bipartisanship takes hold of this new Congress and they work with Bush and the future President to make this a stronger nation.

NFL Roundup
This is probably my final post concerning the 2006 NFL Season. Needless to say it has been quite an interesting season with what I feel will end in an AFC Champion. Here's why:

An AFC team has won the Superbowl 7 out of the last 9 contests and AFC Teams won 62.5% (42-20) of their games against NFC opponents this season.

The average record for a playoff team in the NFC is 9.83-6.16 (rounded up to 10-6). The AFC's average you might ask? 11.66-4.33 (rounded up to 12-4).

And its not because the AFC was a cake-walk conference. If you look back two weeks before the playoffs and studied the records and teams still in playoff contention that subsequently did not make the playoffs you would have seen:

In the NFC: Green Bay (finished 8-8), Minnesota (6-10), Carolina (8-8), Atlanta (7-9), St. Louis (8-8) and San Francisco (7-9), one of which played in the postseason in 2005 (Carolina).

In the AFC: Buffalo (finished 7-9), Cinncinnati (8-8), Pittsburgh (8-8), Tennessee (8-8), Jacksonville (8-8), Denver (9-7), four of which played in January last year (Pittsburgh, Cinncinnati, Jacksonville, and Denver)

So with two weeks to go, AFC teams were fighting much harder for playoff spots against more teams that had asserted themselves as contenders. The teams that made the AFC playoffs are therefore, based upon my arguments, more suited to win a Super Bowl Title.

But this is the NFL and anything can happen. Enjoy the Playoffs.... Go Steelers in 2007!

With two weeks to go....
in the NFL regular season, I thought I'd do a quick wrap up to show you how much I suck at picking teams.

In the AFC East I picked (in order) the Pats (13-3), the Fish (11-5), the Bills (6-10) and Jets (2-14) when in reality the Pats are 10-4, Jets 8-6, Buffalo 7-7 and Miami is eliminated from postseason play at 6-8. Obviously the biggest disappointment has come from the lack of big-time play of Miami and Culpepper's inability to stay healthy or competitive. Though the defense has been pretty solid, their offensive lacking was way too substantial. But I must give credit to where credit is due and at 8-6, the Jets are in a 4 way tie for the AFC wild-card.... a phenomenal feat for a team that has struggled in recent years.

In the AFC North I took the Steelers (12-4), Bengals (11-5), Ravens (5-11) and the Browns (3-13). My obvious mistake was placing took much confidence on the shoulders of Roethlisberger after his off season of terror. The Steelers (currently 7-7) struggled early in the season on offense, defense and in controlling turnovers and now it seems too late to make a run at the playoffs. Very few picked Baltimore (11-3) to win the division this year and most of my apprehension came from the questionable performance of McNair and whether or not the defense could stay healthy. With both of those qualms settled, look for this team to be hot at home in the playoffs. Cincinnati (8-6) is still trying to prove that last year's record wasn't a fluke and Palmer is still trying to get his surgery behind him. And the Browns (4-10).... well they suck.

I'm most confident in my AFC South Picks: Indy (14-2), Jags (11-5), Titans (6-10) and Texans (2-14). Indy (currently 11-3) has faltered in the past few weeks but rebounded Monday Night against the Bengals to clinch the division and start a run at home field advantage. They are a solid team on defense and can be explosive under the guidance of Manning. Jacksonville (8-6) has been one of those teams that will surprise you one week with phenomenal play but then stink up the field only seven days later. They are inconsistent and that is their weakness. If they manage to squeeze in as the 6th seed look for their postseason to be short lived. Originally I had the Titans (7-7) finishing 2nd in the AFC South and for obvious reasons... they are finally starting to gel on the field and the offense is coming together. 2006 has been a rebuilding year, but nonetheless, look for the Titans to come out hot in '07. Again, the Texans (4-10)... the suck too. Its hard to win games when your point difference is over 100.

In the AFC West I took Denver winning the shebang at 13-3, the Chargers in second at 10-6 then KC and Oakland finishing out at 7-9 and 5-11. If LT stays healthy and Philips stays cool, we could easily see the Chargers (12-2) advancing through the playoffs to the Super Bowl. Keep in mind they have great chance of winning home field advantage and that they are undefeated at home this season and you've got quite a playoff picture forming. These last two games will be a test for Cutler and the Broncos (8-6). Even if Denver finishes at 8-8 they can feel confident as long as Cutler goes out with a decent (90.0 or above) QB rating. And the Chiefs (7-7) have, like the Jags, been too inconsistent to be much of a threat. Randy Moss should start raising hell over in the bay, cause the Raiders (2-12) definitely need some help next year.

Because I don't really care about the NFC I'll just wrap up my picks:

East
I picked Giants 11-5, Skins 9-7, Cowboys 8-8, Philly 5-11.... This division is ridiculous... Dallas is right now 9-5, Philly is 8-6 and the Giants are 7-7 and all three have decent shots at the postseason... I have mercy and will do nothing more than state the skins' record: 5-9.

North
I took Chicago 11-5, Vikings 10-6, Packers 7-9 and Lions 3-13... Put too much faith in the Vikings to play solid D and put up points.... by the way NFC North Record vs AFC Teams: 4-12. Chicago has all but locked a Super Bowl Berth at 12-2, the only NFC team with more than 10 wins, the Packers and Vikings struggle at 6-8 and the Lions may hit my prediction exactly. They are 2-12.

South
I picked the Looked-Good-On-Paper-Panthers to win it all at 14-2, Atlanta to follow at 9-7, tied with the Bucs and the Saints, whose defense I was wary in, to finish at 4-12. I would like to mention that my one surprise team in the NFC was the Saints.... and what a surprise they have been. At 9-5 they have locked up the division and Brees looks to break Marino's season yardage record. Atlanta is in the thick of the NFC playoff race at 7-7, with Carolina "Can't Play 4th Qtr Football" at 6-8 and the Bucs at 3-11.

West
Took Seattle at 11-5, Arizona at 9-7, Rams at 5-11 and the 49ers at 2-14. The 49ers (6-8) have shocked me this season and are still eligible to win the division! How crazy is that?!? Seattle, even with its top guns healthy, doesn't look like the team of '05 and at 8-6 is struggling to win this tight division. The Rams enjoyed early success but then faltered and also sit at 6-8. Arizona, like Miami, became a huge bust for a lot of people and at 4-10 can officially call this year the "rebuilding year."


With only 6 of the 12 playoff spots locked up by Week 15, I look forward to watching the last two weeks of the season develop.... who really wants to be play football in January? I can't wait to find out.

For those of you who dont know:
Straight Up = Who will win the game, regardless of the point spread
Point Spread = Say the game is Eagles -11 Jets. This means that betting the Jets will result in a win if the Jets either 1) Win the game by any number of points or 2)Lose the game by less than 11 points. If the final score was Eagles 20, Jets 17, Jets Betters would win the point spread, but not the Straight Up.
Over/Under = The combined total points scored by both teams in a game. If the over/under of that Eagles-Jets game was 39.5, Under bettors would win since the total score was 37.

Prediction Update: Week 5
Ok. So I learned an important lesson this past month. Picking Weekly Winners at the beginning of the season is about as easy as completing a marathon with no legs. So what I decided to do is the following: I'll continue with updates of my original picks at three more intervals: Week 5 (this week), Week 11 and Week 17. Additionally what I'll do from now on is pick weekly winners. I'll pick straight up, against the spread and the over/under then evaluate how well I would fair as a 900-man. I've decided to do this mostly because I just wathced Two For the Money and feel that picking teams instead of actually putting down my own money is easy.
