Techniques of elaborating concepts


Steel structure and frame walls
  Breuer house I uses wooden frame wall system.
Farnsworth house is steel-framed which was sandblasted to guarantee the smoothest of surfaces, then painted white.
Villa Maesen is steel-framed with steel I-beams carrying the roof.
Elevated floor
Breuer house I is elevated on a concrete base
Farnsworth house is elevated above the ground by eight columns with roof and floor planes cantilevering in four directions to create an effect of hanging balcony. It is raised five feet above grade:

to protect against the frequent flooding of the river and create the effect of a weightless floating body.

Villa Maesen is raised on a concrete slab, partly over a basement garage and store rooms.
Trees to enclose the house
Farnsworth house is situated in rural area with lots of trees around. So there is no visible neighboring dwellings.
Villa Maesen is surrounded by lots of tall trees.

Therefore, privacy of the residents is maintained.
