The first C class locomotive entered service on 14 May 1977 and all ten were delivered by July 1978.
They are basically a copy of the WAGR L class but they featured a more more modern cab with a full width nose.
To reduce frame transmitted vibrations the cab was placed on four rubber mounts.
The cab also featured Clyde's "clean cab" design. There were no sharp protrusions that could cause injury in a collision.
The C class was restricted to 80kph because of their high weight.
They were mainly used on the main north eastern and western lines to Sydney or Adeliade but they also worked to Long Island and Portland.
In the mid 90's they were transferred to National Rail and continued to haul interstate freight trains to Sth. Australia and N.S.W.
When the new NR class locomotives entered service the C class were stored at Junee (NSW).
Recently C508 and C505 have been repainted and modified for driver only operation.
They have re-entered service in the Melbourne area, mainly for shunting duties.
