In 1957, ten Clyde/GM model A7 Co-Co diesel electric locomotives entered service with the Victorian Railways as the S class with road numbers 300 - 309. These ten locomotives were found to be extremely reliable and were used for both passenger and freight service.
With the construction of the north east standard gauge (completed in 1962), the VR ordered a further eight Clyde/GM A7's, the last unit arriving in 1961. These locomotives were given the road numbers S310 - S317. All the S class locomotives were named after prominent people associated with the development of Victoria. (see Road Plates for details)

Withdrawals began in 1969 when S314 and S316 were destroyed in the Violet Town head on collision between the Southern Aurora and a freight train.
Further withdrawals occurred during the late 1980's and early 1990's as more modern locomotives were acquired by V/Line and some services were cut back.

Currently there are only seven S class locomotives in service with commercial operators.
S301, 306, 307 and 310 were in storage when Freight Victoria (now Freight Australia) purchased V/Line Freight. These units were soon returned to service to relieve a motive power shortage and are all based in the Geelong area.
S300, 302, 311 and 312 were purchased by West Coast Railway in 1994. S300, 302 and 311 are now used on the Warrnambool passenger services with WCR's two B class units (B61 and B76).

In addition to the units in service with Freight Australia and West Coast Railway, two units were allocated to preservation groups for restoration to operating condition.
Steamrail was allocated S313 and it is currently used for enthusiast tours and charters.
S303 is undergoing a full restoration at the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre and should return to service soon.
S308 is preserved as a static exhibit at the ARHS museum near Williamstown after being modified by V/Line in the late 80's as a teaching aid for diesel mechanics at Dynon (Many panels were replaced with perspex).
