Smash Mouth, who claim their odd name from a phrase Mike Ditka invented to
describe the intensity of a good football game, is Steve Harwell (vocals), Greg
Camp (guitar), Paul De Lisle (bass) and Kevin Coleman (drums). They started in
1994 when Harwell’s rap project (F.O.S.) sunk and he decided to hook up with
longtime friend Kevin Coleman to form a new band. Through Harwell’s manager,
the two were introduced to local guitarist Greg Camp, who had just left his own band (Lackdaddy.) Camp brought bassist
Paul De Lisle into the mix and a unique stylistic mesh of ska, punk and a little funk was
borne in Smash Mouth. Says Steve, the beefy lead singer who sports a tattoo of Elvis on
his left forearm: "When we formed the band, we didn’t have one style of music in mind.
We just decided we were going to write songs that feel good to us. Put every style in a
blender on high, chop, frappe’, whatever you want, mix it together, pour yourself a cup,
take a big shot, and that’s us."
