A Brief Biography | Music Training | ||||||||
T.
N. Sivakumar, born in September 1959, is a flutist full of promise. When
he was 12 years old, both his eyes were damaged in an unfortunate accident,
as a result of which, he became blind.
Sivakumar was told by Kanchi Paramacharya H.H. Chandrasekhara Saraswathi that he would spend the rest of his life with a bamboo stick in his hands. This prophecy by Paramacharya has become true. But instead of a white stick used by the blind, the bamboo stick referred to is a FLUTE which Sivakumar plays to help him earn a living.
Sivakumar began his practice on the flute when he was 17. Sivakumar had
a very famous "athai magan" (cousin) - T.R.Mahalingam (Mali) - who
was a genius in his field and time. However, as a cousin and disciple of
Mali, he never imitates Mali's style of flute music. He follows his own
musical instincts and imagination.
"Handicapped by his blindness, the only way he could learn flute was by listening and memorising the sounds and notes he heard. Today, Sivakumar who is a Diploma holder from the Music College in Madras, teaches as well as performs regularly in various parts of India." ........... Excerpts from
