Hollandsworth (Hollingsworth)

Vincent Hollinsworth

The early years of Vincent Hollinsworth of Wilkes/Ashe County, North Carolina are yet to be discovered. Family researchers have attempted to link him with a Vincent Hollingsworth, a contemporary of Queen Anne's County, of Maryland who was the son of Vincent, Sr., son of William, son of John who entered the colonies around 1650. The evidence found to this point is more coincidental than conclusive; therefore, judgment must be withheld until the relationship is better defined.

He lived in Wilkes/Ashe County as early as 1782 according to a county tax record. Ashe County was formed from part of Wilkes County in 1799. He died before late 1816 as indicated by the estate record concerning the sale of his land. He is listed on a North Carolina state census made between 1784 and 1787. His name appears on the first United States census made in 1790, as well as a federal sensuses of 1800 and 1810.

Mary Hollandsworth was among the heirs on the 1816 estate record previously mentioned, but it is not known whether she was the widow or a daughter. The identified children are: five sons - James, William, John, Beasley, and Isaac; five daughters - Mrs. Lemuel Lunsford, Mrs William Hubbard, Mrs Stephen (Winny) Reed, Mrs. William (Susannah) Cooper, and Mrs. Levi Potter.

In 1793 Vinson Hollonsworth received a state grant of 320 acres located on the North Fork of New River. William, his son, bought 135 acres of this land from his father in 1808. The above named estate record was for the sale of 190 acres located on the North Fork of New River.

William Hollingsworth
William Hollingsworth (1770 - 1843) and his wife Rhoda (Reed) Hollingsworth (1770 - 1873) homesteaded 80 acres in 1840 and 120 acres in 1841 in Gasconade County, Missouri. Rhoda is said to have been full-blooded Cherokee Indian. They had 12 children, 3 sons - Jonathan, James, and Isam Marion, Sr.; 7 daughters - Nancy, Lydia, Rebecca, Charity, Mary, Susannah, and Rhoda, are the ones that are known of.

Isam Marion Hollandsworth Sr.
Isam was born October 25, 1815 in Clay County, Kentucky. He married Nancy Newcomb (1816 - 1901) on February 1, 1839 in Marion County, Kentucky. They had 14 children, 10 sons - Jonathan, Alexander, William, Isam Jr., James, Andrew, Addison, Elihue, George, and Robert; 4 daughters - Rebecca, Angaline, Nancy, and Maryette. Isam and Nancy had a unique plan for their "old age." In 1897 they deeded their land to Marion and his wife, Mercy. In return Marion and Mercy agreed "to keep and take care of them." The next year they bought the land back. It is reported that they transferred the land from son to son as a means of support and care for themselves. Nancy died December 29, 1901. Isam died during that same decade.

Rebecca Hollandsworth

Rebecca Hollandsworth was born on February 19, 1842 in Gasconade County, Missouri. She married Frederick August Hain January 4, 1861. They had 6 children, Pauline, Ida Bertha, Ernest, Lydia Ann, Albert P, and Henry F. She died February 27, 1918 and is buried in the Hain Family Cemetery in Rosebud, Missouri.

All the information that I have on the Hollandsworth part of my family I got from a book called "The Holly Tree" by Betty Hollandsworth Jackson. Thanks Betty for all the hard work you put into the book!
