A New Era

Upon leaving Motown in 1975, the group was forced to change its name to "The Jacksons". Youngest brother Randy also officially joined the group -- although he had appeared on stage with the J5 (playing the bongos), he had not been recognised as a group member, probably because the J5 would have had to change their name to the J6!

Taking Control

The incentive to switch from Motown was to give the brothers more artistic freedom. Epic promised this, but maintained heavy control over the first two albums, which were produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The Jacksons contributed Blues Away and Style of Life to their first, and Different Kind of Lady and Do What You Wanna to their second album.

It was only at the third album that the brothers put their collective foot down, and finally got the chance to write and produce an entire album themselves. There was a lot of speculation about their having creative control -- some people felt it would be a case of "too many cooks spoiling the broth". However, instead of all going into the studio at the same time, the brothers took turns going in, each one adding his own special touch until the end product was done. The formula worked splendidly -- to date, Destiny stands as my favourite Jacksons album.

They went on to produce another two albums -- Triumph in 1980 and Victory in 1984, also releasing a "live" album of their "Triumph" tour in 1981. I find that this last album embodies the Jackson concert "formula" -- if you compare their concerts throughout their career, you will notice that they repeat certain aspects that even Michael still uses to date.

Reunion...and Split

Jermaine finally re-joined his brothers on the Victory album and Tour. The tour, however, was fraught with problems, logistically and internally, and following the tour, Michael and Marlon did not renew their contracts with Epic. The Jacksons now consisted of Jackie, Tito and Randy, with Jermaine appearing courtesy of his then record label, Arista. They contributed a cut, Time Out For The Burlgar, to the soundtrack of the movie "Burglar".

The Jacksons released 2300 Jackson Street, which features every Jackson sibling except LaToya on the title track of the same name. Their children also sang background vocals on the song. Since then, they have not released any new albums.
