REMEMBER WHEN

Virg and I use to be neighbors.
Now nearly 70 years later we are a block apart. I still remember his parents greenhouse behind their house. The moist aroma of the plants.

Ned Organizing the Meat Cooler.

W.E. Baker store being torn down in the 80s I think.

Remember the Downtown Elevator Fire in the late 60s?

And Gocart Races at the Fair Before (because the elevator is still in the background.)

Courtesy Ken and Toddy Schroeder.

This Livery Barn

was operated by Basil Hunt Strahan and was reported to have gone out of business in 1915.
Basil is seen here holding the horse on the left. His brother Nathan Ulysses, seen here holding the colt,
was Randolph County Sheriff from 1910 to 1913.
This building was located in the first half block of the 100 block of N. Main St. east side.
Submitted by Shirley and Bob Wilkinson of Vacaville, CA.
Shirley is the grandaughter of Nathan.
Many thanks Shirley.

And We Had a Blacksmith

located 100 block of East Oak south side at the alley.
We youngsters would shoot sparrows all around the barn with our BB guns.

The Old Fire Bell

that was on display at the corner of Howard and Fulton Sts began it's duties
on a wooden tower along side the railroad. It is seen here
at the right edge of the picture as seen looking west from Main St crossing.

Remember the Ole School?

And Roger kept us warm by keeping the furnace going and the chimney smokin'.

Remember When We Had 2 Groceries?

Harness's north of the tracks and the IGA beside the Post Office.
Is that the rear end of a Corvair lower right?

Remember Wood's "Drug Store"

And Gas Under 4 Bits?

Nice 1970 pictures from Ruth Traub. Thanks Ruth.

Remember when TV actress Shelly Long from CHEERS came to Parker City to be in a movie?

    .

And George Pursley's part was to "pretend" to give one of the actors a haircut
and Lloyd Townsend had a quick scene with Shelly during the parade.
This movie was shot with the street fair as a backdrop with actress Shelly Long and 3 actors as an educational feature explaining the workings of "Credit."
Many Parker City citizens can be recognized as "bit" players in the movie also.
All photos were taken from the movie which was produced by Tim Conner a Parker City native.
And here is more of the story.

Remember the house between the Friend's Church and the Morgan building? Remember this?

They use to paint the top of the water tower untethered...whew.
Taken through a telescope 6 blocks away.

Rex did it with the backhoe. -- Higher than the electric wires.

And who had to fix it? - 1981.

A look at the old stock yards located where Ran-Del is now.
A train is visible at the Franklin St. crossing.
Submitted by Jack Lewis.

Remember Harry Miller when he owned the downtown tavern?
I think those are signs in the background, not dancing girls.
Submitted by Rex Amburn.

Parker United Electric began here.
Corner of 32 & Rinard St.

Then it was enlarged and became Gambles and even sold motorcyles.
Owned and operated by Charles Amburn.
Pizza King building is in background.
Submitted by Jerry & Shirley Amburn

A float in the 1928 street fair. Ora Smith & Hillard Porter standing.
Vernon Hyer on float above Hillard on right. The float is promoting Hyer's Groceries, Meats and Dry Goods.
Submitted by Jack Lewis.

And a picture of Hyer's Groceries, Meats and Dry Goods. Is the "Mock's building along side the post office I assume, except the post office isn't there yet.

There were clowns at the street fair that year.

A picture of the old Parker School with the dome still intact.
The "path" behind the gentlemen is most likely the "highway".
The railroad ties they are sitting on makes me wonder if the interurban between here and Muncie was in the process of being built.

The mailman making his rounds.

The gathering for retiring(seated)postal workers Gordon Reed, Mrs. Lester Dickey and Lester Dickey.
Attending were Fritz Sullivan, Noel Thornburg, Charles Amburn, Marvin (Bud) Wright, Wayman Jacobs, Martin Wood and George Pursley.

Remember the Dotson Elevator(or was it Tremble's?)

and I don't know why we called it an elevator, it didn't have the capability to elevate anything) located at the railroad and Fulton St.?

Then it was Torn (burned) Down.

Phelp's Machine was on that lot later. This elevator was known more by me as where the coal came from
that dad shoveled into our stove each winter and I shoveled out the ashes.

Remember the downtown area with the elevator on Main St. and the bank before the addition on the east end and drive-thru?
And "Ted's house" south of the "bank".
