Darlington-Elmer A. "Jack" Maxwell, 76, died Monday morning in Culver Hospital, where he had been a patient seven days. He had been seriously ill 10 days. Mr. Maxwell was a drainage contracter for several years before his retirement in 1961. He was a member of Garfield Church and had attended Garfield schools. He was born Aug. 10, 1902 in Boone County near Thorntown, a son of Alexander C. and Minnie Steffler Maxwell. He lived in Montgomery County most of his life. Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Caroline) Horine of Anderson and Mrs. Amy Hulvey of Darlington; and two brothers, Lawrence A. Maxwell of Anderson and Ralph L. Maxwell of near Darlington. He was preceded in death by seven brothers.

Darlington-Mrs. Minnie S. Maxwell, 95, died Thursday morning, July 23, at her home. Born June 24, 1869, the daughter of Christian and Louisa (Unger) Steffler, at Mockmuhl, Germany, she came to Montgomery County at the age of 11. She was married to Alexander Maxwell in March of 1888. After their marriage, they resided on a farm north of Bowers Station. She had been a resident of Darlington, where she was a member of the Missisinewa White Church of the Brethren, for the past 40 years. Mrs. Maxwell had a lifelong hobby of making quilts and giving them to her friends and relatives. She continued active in this endeavor until recent months. Surviving are seven sons, Walter of Crawfordsville, Fred of Lebanon, Lawrence of Anderson, and Ales, Bryl, Ralph and Jack, all of Darlington; two daughters, Mrs. Paul Horine of Anderson and Mrs. Amy Hulvey of Darlington; 37 grandchildren; and 109 great-grandchildren, and a number of great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, two brothers and a sister.

Smartsburg-Silas Grantham Maxwell, age 76, died at his home in Smartsburg Thursday morning at 1 o'clock following an illness of two years. Mr. Maxwell suffered an attack of influenza two years ago from which complications developed that caused his death. Mr. Maxwell was born on Jan. 22, 1855 near Salem in Washington county, a son of Caswell and Mary (Myers) Maxwell. He was the oldest of a family of fourteen children. On Oct. 25, 1910 he was united in marriage to Malissa Mastin, who survives him. He was a member of the Smartsburg Christian church. In addition to his widow, Mr. Maxwell is survived by one stepson Claude Mastin, of Bellingham, Wash., two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Steffler, of Anderson, Mrs. Hattie M. Lytle, of Downey, IA., five brothers, Alec of Darlington, George of this place, Jacob of Anderson, Ed of Thorntown, and Thomas of Crawfordsville, and several nieces and nephews.

Death of Mrs. Maxwell--Mrs. Mary Maxwell, relict of the late Caswell Maxwell, died Saturday at 5 o'clock p.m. at the residence 313 West Perry Street, aged 63 years. She was a victim of consumption. The funeral will occur from her late residence at 10 o'clock today, Rev. Wallace Tharp, officiating. Inter., at Oak Hill. She had been ill about two weeks. Mrs. Maxwell was the widow of the late C.F. Maxwell. She leaves 11 children, all of whom are at home.

Darlington, Oct. 11 - Alexander Maxwell, resident of this place for many years, died at his home here Friday morning at 5:30 o'clock following an illness of several months duration. Death was due to a complication of diseases. Mr Maxwell was born in Marion County on June 11, 1860, the son of Caswell and Mary Maxwell. He was married March 24, 1888 to Miss Minnie Steffler. He was a member of the Christian Congregational Church and of the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias lodges. He was always an active worker in the Democratic party and was a precinct committeeman at the time of his death. The survivors include the wife, Mrs. Minnie Maxwell; two daughters, Miss Carrie Maxwell, at home, and Mrs Amy Williams, of Darlington; nine sons, Austin and Walter, all of Darlington, Fred of Kirklin, Clarence a sailor stationed at San Diego, Ca.; and Elmer, Ralph, Lawrence and Byrl all at home; a sister Mrs. Amanda Steffler of Anderson; four brothers Jack, George and Tom all of near Smartsburg,and 28 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Another son died in infancy. The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Christian Congregational Church. Burial will be in the Darlington Odd Fellows cemetery.

Caswell F. Maxwell, aged sixty-three years, died this morning at 3:30 o'clock at his home on the corner of Gibson and Chestnut streets. The funeral occurs tomorrow at two o'clock. Intermet at Oak Hill. Mr. Maxwell was a native of Salem, Indiana, and resided there until March 1877 when he came to this county. During the war he served in Company L 9th Indiana calvary and was a good soldier. He was married forty-four years ago and his wife, with eleven children survive him. His living children are Silas, John, Alexander, Luther, George, Ed, Jacob, Thomas, Annie and Hattie and Mrs. Amanda Stephler, of Anderson. All the sons reside in this county, and all are voters, being as their father was, Democrats. Mr. Maxwell was a man who had never been sick until seized by his fatal illness. He was a man generally respected and hightly esteemed.

His funeral occurred on Wed. afternoon.
