GORDON ARMSTRONG

Sweeper
Previous clubs: Sunderland, Bury Most famous for his exploits with Sunderland, Armstrong is a combative midfielder who signed on the same day as Peter Swan - also on a free transfer from Bury. Armstrong played over 350 games for Sunderland - including an FA Cup Final - before moving on and becoming part of the Stan Ternent revolution at both Bury and Burnley.

GRAHAM BRANCH

Striker
Previous clubs: Heswall, Tranmere, Bury (loan), Wigan (loan), Stockport

Signed on a free at the end of 1998, Graham is hoping to relaunch his career with the Clarets. An enigmatic forward, he had been released by Tranmere at the end of the 1997-98 season having failed to convince John Aldridge of his consistency. Initially he seemed onto a winner with Stockport but it was not to be. He bagged his first goal for the Clarets in the remarkable 4-3 win against Bristol Rovers on January 9.

CHRIS BRASS

Right-back.
Previous club: Torquay (loan).

A confident and gifted youngster Chris is capable of playing on either flank although his best position is at right back. He looked to be developing quickly during the 1995-96 season in that position before a groin injury interrupted his progress.

The 1996/97 season saw Adrian Heath opt for a 3-5-2 formation in which Brass blossomed as one of the trio of mobile centre backs. A strong tackler, the youngster has been tipped for the top.

COLIN CARR-LAWTON

Striker
Signed from trainee

Apart from a spell on loan with Leek Town, Colin's only senior game until last season was as a substitute against Stockport in the Auto Windscreens Shield. He was given a brief substitute's role at Grimsby in November 1997 and hopes to step up his progress this time around.

ANDY COOKE

Striker.
Previous club: Newtown.

Having stepped up from the League of Wales in the summer of '95, Cooke took some time to adjust to the pace of the professional game. Strong in the air and a natural finisher, he struck to earn a point at Preston on September 20 when Burnley were desperate for points, and his form developed over the season to the point where he struck a double in the shock 2-0 win at home to leaders Watford in January 1998. He went one better with a hat-trick in the 7-2 win over York three weeks later.

Cooke's two goals on the last day of the 1997-98 season kept Burnley in the second division, and was immediately offered a three-year extension to his contract. This term he scored twice in the 2-1 home win against Millwall on September 1 and got the only goal to beat Oldham the following month. He also scored what proved to be the winner in the 4-3 cracker against Bristol Rovers on January 9.

TOM COWAN

Defender
Previous clubs: Clyde, Glasgow Rangers, Sheffield United, Stoke City, Huddersfield Town.

A £20,000 acquisition from Huddersfield Town in March 1999, Cowan will bring reliability and dependability to the Burnley defence. A solid left-back equally at home defending and going forward. A good passer of the ball, deceptively strong in the air and a reliable tackler.

PAUL CRICHTON

Goalkeeper
Previous Clubs: Nottingham Forest, Notts County (Loan), Darlington (Loan), Peterborough United (Loan), Darlington (Loan), Swindon Town (Loan), Rotherham United (Loan), Torquay United (Loan), Peterborough United, Doncaster Rovers, Grimsby Town, Aston Villa (loan), West Brom

The much travelled keeper moved from WBA to Burnley in November 1998 for £100,000.

Another of the former Blundell Park brigade at The Hawthorns, Paul's time at Grimsby saw him established as a top keeper after an extremely fragmented early career. Moved to the Hawthorns for £250,000 in the summer of 1996 after a long contract dispute at Grimsby.

STEVE DAVIS

Defender
Previous clubs: Southampton, Burnley, Notts County (loan), Luton Town

Signed for a third time by the Clarets in December 1998 in a £750,000 deal. Steve had played alongside his namesake at the heart of Burnley's defence the first time he was at Turf Moor, on loan, in 1989. He won his only club honour during his second spell, helping Burnley lift the last ever Division Four title in 1992. He went to Luton in the summer of 1995 and did well with the Hatters, winning the Players' Player of the Year award last term. He was on target for the Clarets within a month of re-signing, getting the first in the 4-3 win against Bristol Rovers.

MICHAEL DEVANEY

Winger
Signed from trainee

Michael can play down the left as a full back or winger. The youngster covers a lot of ground and impressed for the youth team and reserves last season before earning a professional contract.

PHIL EASTWOOD

Forward
Previous club: Telford (loan), Kettering (loan). Signed from trainee.

Offered professional terms in time for the 1996-97 season, Eastwood had to be content with leading the reserve and "A" team attack during that campaign. But Chris Waddle felt at the start of this season that he had served his apprenticeship and was ready to be given his chance for Clarets. He started the match against Watford on the opening day of the season, alongside Paul Barnes. This term his only goal in the first half of the season came in the 4-1 derby disappointment at Preston on November 7. Agreed to join Kettering on loan in February '99.

MARK FORD

Midfielder.
Former club: Leeds United.

Tenacious, tough-tackling midfielder whose gritty performances in Leeds' lack-lustre 1995-96 season earned him over 45 disciplinary points and three suspensions. Captain of Leeds' Youth Cup winning side in 1993.

Despite making good progress during the 1995-96 campaign, Ford was unable to establish himself as a regular under George Graham's regime in 1996/97. Ford joined the Clarets for £275,000 in the summer of 1997, with the deal containing a hefty sell-on clause and additional payments after a set number of appearances. Ford struck a goal against Brentford in late Septemebr 1997 though it was mere consolation in the 2-1 defeat.

PAUL GRAHAM

Midfielder
Signed from Trainee

KEVIN HENDERSON

Striker.
Previous club: Morpeth Town

Chris Waddle swooped to sign the non-league scoring sensation in December 1997, following a short trial at Turf Moor.

The forward had attracted scouts from several Nationwide League clubs, with Carlisle and Scunthorpe believed to have made an approach. But Kevin, who had netted 17 goals in the Northern League for his side Morpeth Town, was eager to join the Clarets.

He had to leave behind a job with a building society to throw in his lot with football, but Waddle obviously felt he could make the transition to the Football League. Henderson wrapped up the 4-1 Auto Windscreens Shield triumph against Carlisle in early February 1998 with the last goal. His only strike in the first half of this season came in the 1-1 draw at home to Lincoln on December 28.

MATTHEW HEYWOOD

Defender
Signed from trainee

A tall centre half, Matthew has shown a lot of promise as a trainee, and earned a professional contract at the end of last season. Very strong in the air, Matthew is also comfortable with the ball at his feet.

RONNIE JEPSON

Striker
Previous clubs: Port Vale, Peterborough (loan), Preston, Exeter, Huddersfield, Bury, Oldham Ath.

Ronnie came into the game late, signing professional forms with his first league club Port Vale at the age of 25. He has served his clubs well and despite being somewhat injury prone is a respected forward at this level. He spent last season helping Bury to promotion, earning his first major honour in the game following a £40,000 move from Huddersfield.

He has never commanded any more than £80,000 at a time in transfer fees but his goalscoring record is decent - he scored 21 in 51 league games for Exeter and averaged better than a goal every three games with Huddersfield and Bury. The Gigg Lane club sold Jepson immediately after he'd played in their FA Cup exit at home to Sheffield United, and after the £30,000 deal he made his Oldham debut in the 2-1 home win over Luton four days later. On his travels again in the summer of 1998, he joined the Clarets on a free.

LENNY JOHNROSE

Midfield / Forward.
Previous clubs: Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End (loan), Hartelpool United, Bury.

A veteran of the lower leagues, Johnrose joined Burnley in February 1999 after previously having spells at three other Lancashire clubs.

A midfield general who can also play as a forward, Johnrose is an excellent passer of the ball and also has a keen eye for goal, with the Prestonian relied upon to notch around six or seven goals per term.

FRANK PETTER KVAL

Goalkeeper
Previous club: Fana (Norway)

Young Norwegian shot-stopper who was signed from Fana after impressing on trial. Formerely with Brann Berger, Kval is looking to impress manager Stan Ternent to gain a Longer-term contract. His only first team appearance to date was in the FA Cup defeat at Darlington, but Kval could not be faulted for any of the goals as the Clarets lost 3-2.

GLEN LITTLE

Midfield / Forward.
Previous clubs: Crystal Palace, Glentoran (N. Ireland)

A talented striker or winger who has impressed since signing for the club in November 1996 for £100,000. Released by Crystal Palace at the end of the 1994/5 season he went off to Ireland where he rebuilt his career and was named as the Irish League's Young Player of the Year.

Former boss Adrian Heath first saw him on the Clarets' pre-season tour of Ireland and decided he was worth a gamble after an impressive trial at Turf Moor.

Glen can play anywhere up front but it is felt that on the right wing is where he will find his niche. Last term he struck the first goal in the impressive 2-0 win against Notts County in the Clarets' Auto Windscreens Shield tie. Along with Andy Cooke, he was offered a three-year extension to his contract immediately after helping keep the Clarets in the Second Division in May. Seen very much as Burnley's playmaker, he has been linked to Sunderland among others but injury has halted either a move or progress at Turf Moor.

MICKEY MELLON

Midfielder
Previous clubs: Bristol C, West Brom, Blackpool, Tranmere

Tranmere sold Paul Cook to Stockport County and, within a fortnight, had signed Mickey Mellon from Blackpool for £300,000.

The talented playmaker made his debut at Bramhall Lane as a late substitute on November 1 1997. Moved to Turf Moor in January 1999 in a £350,000 deal.

NEIL MOORE

Defender/midfielder.
Previous clubs: Everton, Blackpool (loan), Oldham (loan), Carlisle (loan), Rotherham (loan), Norwich

Released by Norwich in the summer after having played just twice following his free transfer from Everton, Neil has signed a two year contract at Turf Moor. He can play in either midfield or up front, and did very well on his Clarets debut against Preston in September 1997. Neil was on target with the first in Burnley's 2-1 home win over Northampton last term.

STEVE MORGAN

Defender/midfielder
Previous clubs: Blackpool, Plymouth Argyle, Coventry City, Bristol Rovers, Wigan Athletic

Tough-tackler who can operate in three or four different positions, Morgan signed for Burnley in the summer of 1998.

He has experience at the highest level with Coventry City, and after moving from Highfield Road won a third division championship medal with Wigan Athletic. Is hoping to establish himself as a first-team regular at Turf Moor.

ANDY PAYTON

Striker.
Previous clubs: Hull, Middlesbrough, Celtic, Barnsley, Huddersfield.

A lethal marksman, Payton joined from Huddersfield in January 1998 in the swap deal involving Paul Barnes. He had spent 18 months with the Terriers after signing from Barnsley. He hit the big time when he joined Middlesbrough for £750,000 but spent most of his spell there on the transfer list and also failed to settle at Celtic. He was Huddersfield's top scorer in '96-97 season and was quickly off the mark for the Clarets with the winner in the home 1-0 victory against Southend. Scored four goals in successive games - and five in six - from the end of March to help Burnley towards safety. Bagged both on the opening day this time around to clinch the 2-1 win against Bristol Rovers, then netted six in six games from early September including a double in the 4-0 success over Colchester at Layer Road. His tally by Christmas was 14 in all competitions.

ALLY PICKERING

Defender
Previous clubs: Buxton, Rotherham Utd, Coventry, Stoke

An attacking right-back who was signed on a free in December 1998 on an initial six-month contract. He'd been injured earlier in the season, and lost his place at Stoke to Chris Short. First-choice for two seasons with City after a £300,000 move from Coventry, he only started one game under Brian Little at the Britannia Stadium. He has the ability to deliver deep, telling crosses from the right. As a defender, he has good positional sense and times his tackles well. However, the early days didn't go totally his way at Turf Moor as he netted an own goal to sentence Clarets to defeat at Chesterfield in mid-January '99.

BRIAN REID

Defender
Previous clubs: Rangers, Greenock Morton (loan)

Signed on a free transfer in September 1998 from Rangers, Brian has become an integral part of the Clarets' defence. He notched his first goal to earn a point in the derby game at home to Wigan on September 26, and has been both consistent and popular since his arrival. He was only substituted once in his first 12 appearances, illustrating how highly Stan Ternant regards him.

MARK ROBERTSON

Midfielder
Previous club: Marconi

International Caps: Australia under-21

An Aussie who joined on a two year contract following a successful trial period, Mark made his Burnley debut in the Auto Windscreens Shield win against Notts County in January 1998.

He had previously chanced his arm with Nottingham Forest and in Scotland with Rangers, but was out of luck until Chris Waddle stepped in. He made 15 appearances last term without scoring, but found the net earlier this season in the 3-3 draw at York on Boxing Day.

CHRIS SCOTT

Defender
Signed from trainee

A strong central defender, Chris is in his first full season as a professional, having progressed through the youth ranks at the club, Chris has been given his break in the first team this year. and has turned in some impressive performances that suggest

His arrival in the first team at Turf Moor ensured a continuation of a family tradition in Chris' family, as his father Derek, grandfather and uncle (Brian Miller) all played for Burnley as well.

CARL SMITH

Midfielder
Signed from trainee

Turned professional in September 1997 and made just one sub appearance - five days after signing forms for the Clarets - in the league game at Chesterfield. He might have expected to have to wait a while last term, but in fact he was involved right from the start. He made his full debut in the Worthington Cup tie at Bury, and starred in the 1-1 draw, playing from the start in a league game at Chesterfield four days later. He played in virtually all the league games from then until the end of October.

PAUL SMITH

Winger.
Signed from trainee.

A product of Turf Moor's youth policy, Smith starred in the Clarets' 1994 youth side. He made just one appearance before Adrian Heath's arrival but then began to make a major impact in the side. The left-sided midfielder is certainly one to watch out for in the future, and has already endeared himself to the fans.

RUNE VINDHEIM

Midfielder
Previous club: Brann Bergen (Norway)

Bought in on a non-contract basis by Stan Ternant in October 1998, Rune netted twice in his first three games for the club - the 4-0 win at Colchester and the 1-1 draw at home to Notts County - later that month. A little inconsistent, he was poor in the defeats away to Preston and Darlington in November.

PAUL WELLER

Midfield.
Signed from trainee

A skilful right-sided midfielder, Weller established himself as a first team regular during the 1995/96 season. Not to be confused with the former Jam & Style Council frontman who has now carved out a successful career as a solo performer, this Paul Weller has operated in numerous positions for the Clarets. It was departure of Jimmy Mullen and the arrival of Adrian Heath that saw the talented youngster breakthrough into the first team set up. His goal earned a 3-3 draw at Rotherham in the FA Cup first round last season.

GARETH WEST

Defender
Signed from trainee

Injury trouble marred West ís first year as a professional, but he is hoping to impress after his recovery. A tall centre back, West is good in the air and strong in the tackle.
