The country at that time was thickly populated with indians, and they used to get up on the roof and try to come down through the firepalce chimney. The only way the folks could keep them from coming down was to burn grass or something that would make a lot of smoke.. Then they would leave. The indians also tried to trade their papooses for Silas East, because of his golden hair. Someone had to watch him constantly for a long time. Salley (Murdock) Connett mother of Hettie (Connett) Garrett a full blooded Cherokee she and her husband Elcaney a Quaker preacher lived in a log cabin in the woods with open windows and door. One night while Elcaney was out "callin", when "Bulldog" started barking which was a good sign that a bear or panther was around..."Bulldog started razin a ruckus and I got real scared being alone with the four babys. I looked out and in the moonlite and saw a large black lump. So's thinkin it's a bar I thought to myself, I must go kills this bar before it comes and kills children. I took and axe and thinkin I'll hit it then run my arm down its throat and choke it. I took off runnin and war hoopin with the axe. I swungs the axe hard and when it hits it stucks and I went a flyin over the top of that old burnts out black tree stump I thoughs was a bar. I was teased alot but did'nt think it was funny....

Virgil Garrett SR. Told this story many times about his grandfather a Quaker preacher.. "Gramps bought a new black buggy for church and callin. "The first time he took it to church a wheel came off. He got out took his coat off and fixed the wheel. A little ways down the road another wheel fell off. He again took his coat off and fix it. On his way home another wheel feel off. This time he took his hat off a threw it in the buggy and fixed the wheel. Within the sight of the house another wheel fell off this time he threw his hat and coat in the buggy and said "Lay down religion, I gotta fix this @#@$$%%^^@ wheel!!....Mary Sumpter (Garrett) daughter of Virgil Garrett SR.
