Butterfly Fish

(Pantodon buchholzi)

4 inches (10 cm.). Tank 32 inches (80cm). Stratum: Top. Water : pH= 6-7.5; soft to hard; 81' - 86'F (27 - 30'C). Set up : Tank arranged in dark colors with partial cover of floating plants. Cover well because this fish jumps; leave four to eight inches (10 - 20 cm) between the water surface and the cover. Tip on communities: Fishes of the lower level; no fishes that pull on fins. Food : Large insects; also small fish. No dry food. Sexual diffrences: males have a preculiarly shaped. Concave Anal Fin. Breeding: Spawns below water surface. Remove the floating eggs and transfer them to rearing tank. Start feeding with Arternia. Slight water circulation through an air stone is important so that there are always enough Arternia cattied close to the surface where the brood is. Keep the water level low in the rearing tank for the same reason. Special remarks: This fish was given its name because of its fins, which look like butterfly wings. The broad pectoral fins , which resemble moth's wings, help the fish stay in the air on its short flights above water. Biotope: Still and slow moving water with dense shore vegitation, where these fish catch insects below the water surface; West and Central Africa.
