African Knife Fish

( Xenomstus nigri )

8-12 inches (20-30 cm). Tank: 40 inches (100 cm). Strata: Bottom, Middle. Water: pH 6-7.5; soft to hard; 79-84'F (26-29'C). Set-up: Each fish needs its own hiding place (such as clay pipes). Keep singly in tanks of 40 inches (100cm), in pairs in tanks over 48 inches (120cm). Food: Nutritious live food; also food tablets. Sexual diffrences: Females have a more round belly. Breeding: Spawns in holes and cracks. Transfer eggs to a rearing tank. Start feeding with Arternia. Special remarks: These fish emit barking sounds during spawning. Biotope: Still and slow-moving water in West and Central Africa.
