Anwylaf Iesu ym mmha beth troseddaist?

Ah holy Jesus how hast Thou offended? / Herzliebster Jesu was hast du verbrochen?

Anwylaf Iesu
    ym mmha beth troseddaist
I haeddu'r ddedfryd
    erwin hon a gefaist?
Beth yw dy fai? Pa euog ymddygiadau
  Yw'r eiddot tithau?

Beth all fod achos
    dy ddioddefiadau?
Och gwae! gorchfygir di gan fy mhechodau;
Mae cyfrifoldeb, Iesu, arnaf innau
  Am dy holl boenau.

O gariad mawr,
    na allai neb ei fesur,
A'th arwain di
    ar erwin ffordd y merthyr!
Bûm innau'n byw
    yn hoenus mewn llawenydd -
  Ti biau'r cystudd.

Ond, Iesu, dyro
    d'Ysbryd i'm rheoli,
Ac arwain fi o hyd ar ffyrdd daioni:
Gad im gyflawni, er fy holl bechodau,
  Dy ddymuniadau.

Tôn [11.11.11.5]: Herzliebster Jesu
    (Johann Crüger 1598-1662)

Dearest Jesus, in what thing
    didst thou transgress
To deserve the this severe
    sentence thou didst get?
What is thy fault? What guilty behaviours
  Belong to thee?

What can be the cause
    of thy sufferings?
O woe! thou art overcome by my sins;
The responsibility, Jesus, is upon me
  For all thy pains.

O great love,
    no-one could measure it,
Which led thee
    on the harsh road of the martyr!
Whereas I lived
    gleefully in joy -
  Thine was the affliction.

But, Jesus, grant
    thy Spirit to regulate me,
And lead me along the roads of goodness:
Let me fulfill, despite all my sins,
  Thy wishes.
tr. 2023 Richard B Gillion
(Herzliebster Jesu)
Ah, holy Jesus,
    how hast Thou offended,
That man to judge Thee
    hath in hate pretended?
By foes derided, by Thine own rejected,
  O most afflicted.

Who was the guilty?
    Who brought this upon Thee?
Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone Thee.
’Twas I, Lord, Jesus, I it was denied Thee!
  I crucified Thee.

Lo, the Good Shepherd
    for the sheep is offered;
The slave hath sinned,
    and the Son hath suffered;
For man’s atonement,
    while he nothing heedeth,
  God intercedeth.

For me, kind Jesus,
    was Thy incarnation,
Thy mortal sorrow,
    and Thy life’s oblation;
Thy death of anguish
    and Thy bitter passion,
  For my salvation.

Therefore, kind Jesus,
    since I cannot pay Thee,
I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee,
Think on Thy pity and Thy love unswerving,
  Not my deserving.
tr. Robert Seymour Bridges 1844-1930
