Cofia blentyn ddweyd y gwir

Cofia, blentyn, ddweyd y gwir;
Myn oddiwrth anwiredd gadw'n glir;
  Pwysa'th ymadroddion gyda phwyll,
  Ffiaidd gan yr Arglwydd
      bob rhyw dwyll.

Bydd di'n hyf i ddweyd y gwir,
Ie, wrth y penaf yn y tir;
  Paid a meddwl am yr hyn all dd'od,
  Rhyngu bodd dy Dduw
      fo'th unig nôd.

Os gwnest yn y tŷ rhyw gam,
Paid a'i wadu wrth dy dad na'th fam:
  Ie, os rhaid
      cosbi am y bai,
  Paid a chelu'r gwir na'i wneyd yn llai.

Y bachgen dewraf yn y tir
Ydyw'r un na fỳn
    ddewyd ond y gwir;
  Ie, gwron mwy na'r milwr yw,
  Pob bachgen yn geirwir gan ein Duw.

Yn mhob lle ac ar bob pryd,
Prisia di y gwir yn fwy na'r byd:
  Dewis di yn hytrach fod yn dlawd
  Nag ymostwng byth i dwyllo'th frawd.

Tôn [8989]: dm|sm|ll|s- (George F Root 1820-95)

Remember, child, tell the truth;
Insist on keeping clear of untruthfulness;
  Weigh thy utterances with wisdom,
  Detestable to the Lord
      is every kind of deception.

Be thou bold to tell the truth,
Yes, to the chief in the land;
  Do not think of what can come,
  To satisfy the pleasure of thy God
      be thy only aim.

If thou makest in thy house some mistake,
Do not deny is to thy father nor thy mother:
  Yes, if there must be
      chastisement for the fault,
  Do not hide the truth nor make it less.

The bravest boy in the land
Is the one who insists
    on nothing but the truth;
  Yes, a greater hero than the soldier he is,
  Every boy truthful by our God.

In every place and at every time,
Value thou the truth more than the world:
  Choose thou rather to be poor
  Than stoop ever to deceive thy brother.
