Day of wrath! Oh how bitter Shall be that terrible day, When the world becomes ashes! What wailing there shall be, and trembling, When Christ comes from heaven to judge us For our work, and question us closely! Sound the last trumpet wonderfully, Through the vast regions of the deep grave, Drawing everyone before the throne. Every secret thing shall come into the light - All our actions and our words; Everyone shall receive his just rewards. Almighty heavenly King Who forgives freely the guilty, O Saviour, be merciful! Lord, remember me, Oh remember - For me thou didst suffer here - Receive me on the last day. God of the vengeance, Judge of righteous ones, Forgive me all my debts, Before the approach of the day of reckonings. In my prayer there is no merit, Save me by thy great mercy, Lest I go to the endless fire. On my knees I am calling, Though I am but dust and ashes, Uphold me in the hour of my death. A day of intense tears that shall be, When there comes from the hot world of ashes Guilty man to get judged - O God, save at that time. Dear Jesus, unfailing Lord Give to the saints rest forever.tr. 2013 Richard B Gillion |
Day of wrath and doom impending, [1] David's word with Sibyl's blending, Heaven and earth in ashes ending! Oh, what fear man's bosom rendeth, [2] When from heaven the Judge descendeth, On whose sentence all dependeth. Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth; [3] Through earth's sepulchres it ringeth; All before the throne it bringeth. Lo! the book, exactly worded, [5] Wherein all hath been recorded: Thence shall judgement be awarded. King of Majesty tremendous, [8] Who dost free salvation send us, Fount of pity, then befriend us! Faint and weary, Thou hast sought me, [10] On the Cross of suffering bought me. Shall such grace be vainly brought me? Righteous Judge! for sin's pollution [11] Grant Thy gift of absolution, Ere the day of retribution. Worthless are my prayers and sighing, [13] Yet, Good Lord, in grace complying, Rescue me from fires undying! Low I kneel, with heart submission, [16] See, like ashes, my contrition; Help me in my last condition. Ah! that day of tears and mourning! [17] From the dust of earth returning Man for judgement must prepare him; Spare, O God, in mercy spare him! Lord, all-pitying, Jesus blest, [18] Grant them thine eternal rest.tr. 1849 William Josiah Irons 1812-83 from Latin: Dies irae!
