Fe wawriodd dydd uwch Bethlem dref

Fe wawriodd dydd uwch Bethlem dref
Pan oedd angylion ag un llef
  Yn seinio moliant pêr ynghyd
  Am eni Ceidwad
      mawr y byd.

Ni wyddai gwraig wrth gynnau tân
Na fu erioed bereiddiach cân;
  Ni wyddai gŵr wrth droi i'w waith,
  Ni wyddai'r hen
      na'r plant ychwaith.

Ni wyddai'r llon, ni wyddai'r prudd
Mai hwn oedd y rhyfeddol ddydd
  Pan roes bugeiliaid ar eu hynt
  Anfarwol gân ar flaen y gwynt.

Ni wyddai mawrion balch eu trem,
Ni wyddai'r tlawd fod "Bethlehem"
  Yn enw nad âi'n angof mwy
  Ar fôr na thir – ni wyddent hwy.

Tôn [MH 8888]: Bethlehem
    (W S Gwynn Williams 1896-1978)

Day dawned above the town of Bethlehem
When angels were with one voice
  Sounding sweet praises together
  About the birth of the great
      Saviour of the world.

No woman, while lighting a fire, knew
Whether there was ever a sweeter song;
  No man, while turning to his work, knew,
  Neither knew the old
      nor the children either.

Neither the cheerful, nor the sad knew
That this was the wonderful day
  When shepherds on their course gave
  An immortal song before the wind.

The great and haughty ones did not know
The poor did not know that "Bethlehem" was
  A name that would nevermore be forgotten
  On sea or land - they did not know.
tr. 2023 Richard B Gillion
