Goddefaist, Iesu, ympryd prudd
Mewn anial fan, am ddeugain nydd;
  Cysegraist felly'r
      defod hon
  Yn foddion gras i buro'n bron.

Bydd gyda'th Eglwys ar y llawr,
Bydd gyda'i hedifeirwch mawr;
  Gweddïo mae -
      a'i dagrau'n lli
  Am angof o'th fendithion di.

O maddau ein pechodau cas
Trwy rinwedd pur
    dy ddwyfol ras;
  Ac estyn inni
      nawdd dy law,
  Rhag inni syrthio ddydd a ddaw:

Fel, wedi derbyn llesiant gwir,
Trwy'r aberth hwn,
    ein dirwest hir,
  Yr elom, wedi'r penyd blin,
  I fwyniant gŵyl
      y Pasg a'i rhin.

Thou didst suffer, Jesus, a solemn fast
In a desert place, for forty days;
  Thou didst consecrate thus
      this observance
  As a means of grace to purify our breast.

Be with thy Church on the earth,
Be with her great repentance;
  Praying she is -
      with her tears as a flood
  For forgetting thy blessings.

O forgive our detestable sins
Through the pure virtue
    of thy divine grace;
  And extend to us
      the protection of thy hand,
  Lest we fall on the day to come:

Thus, having received a true benefit,
Through this sacrifice,
    our long abstinence,
  We may go, after the grievous pennance,
  To the enjoyment of the feast
      of the Passover an its merit.

O Jesu Christ, from Thee began
This healing for the soul for man,
  By fasting sought, by fasting found
  Through forty days of yearly round;

That he who fell from high delight,
Borne down to sensual appetite,
  By dint of stern control may rise
  To climb the hills of Paradise.

Therefore behold Thy Church, O Lord,
And grace of penitence accord
  To all who seek with generous tears
  Renewal of their wasted years.

Forgive the sin that we have done,
Forgive the course that we have run,
  And show henceforth in evil day
  Thyself our succor and our stay.

But now let every heart prepare,
By sacrifice of fast and prayer,
  To keep with joy magnifical
  The solemn Easter festival.
