Hiraethu'r wyf ar lawer tro

(Hiraeth y Cristion am y nef)
Hiraethu'r wyf ar lawer tro,
  Wrth ddringo Nebo'n awr;
Am gael o draw rhyw oleu drem,
  Ar furiau Salem fawr.

Os mwy yw'r galar nag yw'r gân,
  Yn awr mewn anial fyd,
Fe fydd y canu yn y man
  Yn fwy na'r gŵyn i gyd.

'Rol cyr'haedd caerau Salem bur,
  Y rhôd fydd wedi troi;
Ceir yno wynfyd yn lle gwae,
  A galar wedi ffoi.
David Thomas (Dafydd Ddu Eryri) 1759-1822

(The Christian's longing for heaven)
Longing I am at many a turn,
  While climbing Nebo now;
To get from afar some bright glimpse,
  Over the walls of great Salem.

If the mourning is greater than the song,
  Now in a desert world,
The singing shall be soon
  Greater than all the complaint.

After reaching the fortresses of pure Salem,
  The sky shall have turned;
Blessedness is to be got there in place of woe,
  And mourning shall have fled.
