To the house of the Lord when they said, "Let us go", To me great joy it was to hear: Our feet are standing within Jerusalem's portals, The one that will not fall from there. Holy Jerusalem, our city, Her foundation is within her herself: And her people are in her in agreement, And God himself has his residence. Since there come the tribes together, With one intent, the tribes of the Lord: The ordinance of Israel and his dwelling-place, And praise to his great sanctity. Since there is the seat of judgment, Which David sat upon: Seek peace and praise for the city, And prosperity for those who love thee. Within thy citadels may there be peace, To thy courts may pleasure come: For the sake of my brothers is this request, And my neighbours also. And for the sake of the house of the Lord our God The one in thee is excellent! Therefore I will seek, Gracious goodness for thee. To me ... joy :: To us ... joy tr. 2011 Richard B Gillion |
1 O 'Twas a joyful sound to hear our tribes devoutly say, Up, Israel, to the temple haste, and keep your festal day. 2 At Salem's courts we must appear with our assembled pow'rs, 3 In strong and beauteous order ranged, like her united tow'rs. 4 'Tis thither, by divine command, the tribes of God repair, Before his ark to celebrate his Name with praise and pray'r. 5 Tribunals stand erected there, where equity takes place; There stand the courts and palaces of royal David's race. 6 O pray we then for Salem's peace, for they shall prosp'rous be, (Thou holy city of our God!) who bear true love to thee. 7 May peace within thy sacred walls a constant guest be found, With plenty and prosperity thy palaces be crowned. 8 For my dear brethren's sake, and friends no less than brethren dear, I'll pray, - May peace in Salem's tow'rs a constant guest appear. 9 But most of all I'll seek thy good, and ever wish thee well, For Zion and the temple's sake, where God vouchsafes to dwell.N Tate & N Brady A New Version of the Psalms of David in Metre 1696 |
