Mewn 'stad o ddiniweidrwydd da, Tra bu'n tad Adda, llwyddodd; Bwytaodd y ffrwyth oedd Duw'n wahardd, A'i enaid hardd a lygrodd. 'Nawr cnawdol genir ni i gyd, Ar ddrwg mae'n bryd yn gwbwl; Ein rheswm colli'i iawn le wnaeth, Aeth cnawd yn gaeth a'r meddwl. Duw'r gallu, adnewydda'n dull, Adfera'n candryll bwerau; Ac ennyn ynom nefol dān, I losgi'n lān ein chwantau. 'Sgrifena'th gyfraith lān, O Dduw, Ar ein tufewnol rannau; A thynned Adda'r ail, ein cār, Ei ddelw ar ein c'lonnau.

In a state of good innocence, While our father Adam was, he prospered; He ate the fruit that God forbade, And his beautiful soul he corrupted. Now we are all born fleshly, On evil is our intent completely; Our reason lose its right place it did, Flesh went captive with the mind. God of might, renew our condition, Revive our shattered powers; And ignite in us heavenly fire, To burn clean our desires. Write thy holy law, O God, On our inward parts; And may the second Adam, our kinsman, Fashion his image upon our hearts. tr. 2020 Richard B Gillion |
Blessed with the joys of innocence, Adam our Father stood, Till he debased his soul to sense, And ate th' unlawful food. Now we are born a sensual race, To sinful joys inclined; Reason has lost its native place, And flesh enslaves the mind. Great God, renew our ruined frame, Our broken powers restore; Inspire us with a heavenly flame, And flesh shall reign no more. Eternal Spirit, write thy law Upon our inward parts; And let the second Adam draw His image on our hearts.
