O deffro fy ardderchog ddawn

(Emyn Boreuol - Alleiriad)
O deffro fy ardderchog ddawn,
Deaeth boreu newydd tirion iawn;
  A'i wrid goleugoch,
      brithgoch bras,
  Sydd yn harddliwio'r
      wybren las.

Wel, cyn y codo'r haul fel cawr,
O'r dwyrain wech i dori'r wawr;
  Dadlwytha bob rhyw syrthni sur,
  Gan wneyd y babell gnawd yn bur.

O deffro'n dryadl, gyda'r wawr,
Fy nhelyn wiw mewn hwyl yn awr;
  Ag odlau cerddgar llafar llon,
  Dyddana fy hiraethus fron.

I Dduw aberthaf yn ddiboen,
Mewn sanctaidd lwyrfryd hyfryd hoen;
  Mawl i'r trag'wyddol Dduw ar g'oedd
  Rho'wn oll o'i flaen,
      â llawen floedd.

Dadseinier clod soniarus Ner
Hyd eitha'r byd, yn anthem bêr;
  A boed pob cenedl,
      fyrddmil cant,
  Yn gwrando nes cydhwylio'r tant.

Ond O! Dduw doeth, dy fawredd di
A fawdd i lawr fy meddwl i;
  Ni ddichon deall,
      iaith, na dawn
  Ei gynyws, na'i fynegi'n iawn.

Mae dy drugaredd mor dra gwych
Ar dy weithredoedd, odiaeth ddrych;
  Dy faith ddoethineb perffaith yw,
  Uwchlaw amgyffred angel gwiw.
Dafydd Owen (Dewi Wyn o Eifion) 1784-1841

[Mesur: LM 8888]

(Morning Hymn - An Allegory)
O awake, my excellent gift,
A new very tender day has come;
  With its ruddy red light,
      coarse red speckles,
  Which is beautifully colouring
      the blue sky.

See, before the sun rises like a giant,
From the brilliant east to break the dawn;
  Unload thy sullen torpor,
  Making the tabernacle of flesh pure.

O awaken thoroughly, with the dawn,
My worthy harp in tune now;
  With loud, cheerful, musical rhymes,
  Delight my longing breast.

To God I shall sacrifice readily,
In the holy resolution of delightful joy
  Praise to the eternal God publicly
  Let us lay everything before him,
      with a joyful shout.

May the tuneful praise of the Lord resound
To the end of the world, as a sweet anthem;
  And let every nation,
      a hundred thousand myriad,
  Listen until jointly tuning their string.

But O, wise God, thy majesty
Drowns my thought;
  Neither thought, nor language,
      nor talent, is able
  To comprehend it, or express it rightly.

Thy mercy is so brilliant
Upon thy deeds, an excellent mirror;
  Thy vast wisdom is perfect,
  Above the grasp of a worthy angel.
tr. 2020 Richard B Gillion

Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
  Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
  To pay thy morning sacrifice.

Thy precious time misspent, redeem,
Each present day thy last esteem,
  Improve thy talent with due care;
  For the great day thyself prepare.

By influence of the Light divine
Let thy own light to others shine.
  Reflect all Heaven’s propitious ways
  In ardent love, and cheerful praise.

In conversation be sincere;
Keep conscience as the noontide clear;
  Think how all seeing God thy ways
  And all thy secret thoughts surveys.

Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
  Who all night long unwearied sing
  High praise to the eternal King.

All praise to Thee, who safe has kept
And hast refreshed me while I slept
  Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake
  I may of endless light partake.

Heav'n is, dear Lord, where’er Thou art,
O never then from me depart;
  For to my soul ’tis hell to be
  But for one moment void of Thee.

Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;
Disperse my sins as morning dew.
  Guard my first springs of thought and will,
  And with Thyself my spirit fill.

Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say,
  That all my powers, with all their might,
  In Thy sole glory may unite.

I would not wake nor rise again
And Heaven itself I would disdain,
  Wert Thou not there to be enjoyed,
  And I in hymns to be employed.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
  Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
  Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Thomas Ken 1637-1711
