O na allwn garu'r Iesu

(Caru a chanmol Iesu)
O na allwn garu'r Iesu
Yn fwy ffyddlon, a'i wasnaethu;
  Dweud yn dda mewn gair amdano,
  Rhoi fy hun yn gwbwl iddo.
Richard Thomas bl.1821

Tunes [8787]:
St Oswald (John Bacchus Dykes 1823-76)
Shipston (English Melody)
Sussex (English Melody,
    adapt. Ralph Vaughan Williams 1872-1958)

The original metre (88.88. Trochaic) is rare and with the rhyming of unstressed syllables would yield a translation such as:

O that I could love my Jesus,
Trust and serve him being joyous:
  Show my love and gladly speak it,
  My whole heart be with his life lit.
tr. 2007 Richard B Gillion
The middle column is a literal translation of the Welsh. A Welsh translation is identified by the abbreviation 'cyf.' (emulation by 'efel.'), an English translation by 'tr.'
