O wele ar y groes

(Yr Wythnos cyn y Pasg)
O wele ar y groes
  Bryniawdwr dynolryw,
Yn marw'n ufudd er ein mwyn,
  I ni gael bythol fyw.

Mawr grynu wnaeth y ddae'r
  Pan grymodd Ef ei ben;
Y celyd greigiau'n chwilfriw'r aent,
  A rhwygo wnaeth y llen.

Yr haul yn ddu a aeth,
  Tywyllodd yr holl dir,
Gan deimlo'n ddwys mewn galar-wisg
  Arteithiau Crist a'i gur.

A fyddwn ninau'n fud,
  Heb deimlo unrhyw loes
Am ein pechodau, y rhai a'i dyg
  I ddyoddef ar y groes!

O! wylwn ger ei fron -
  Bu farw drosom ni,
I'n gwneyd yn blant i Dduw, a'n dwyn
  O'n gwae, i'r nefoedd fry.

Pob clod fo i Ti, ein Duw,
  A'n "Harchoffeiriad mawr,"
Ein nerth hyd ben ein taith,
  A'n bywyd uwch y llawr.

(The Week before Easter)
O see on the cross
  The Redeemer of humankind,
Dying obediently for our sake,
For us to get to live forever.

Greatly tremble did the earth
  When He bowed his head;
The hard rocks went to pieces,
  And rend did the curtain.

The sun went black,
  The whole land darkened,
Feeling intently in mourning garments
The torture of Christ and his pain.

And would we be mute,
  Without feeling any anguish
For our sins, those that led him
  To suffer on the cross?

O let us weep before him! -
  He died for us,
To make us children of God, and bring us
From our woe, to heaven above.

All praise be to Thee, our God,
  And our "Great High Priest,"
Our strength until our journey's end,
And our life above the earth.
