Tan boenau trymion angau trist

(Gwaith gorphenol Crist)
Tan boenau trymion angau trist,
Ar bren y groes
    bu'r anwyl Grist,
  Gorphenodd ei ryfeddol waith:
Pan y gogwyddodd ef ei ben,
Fe dduodd gwawr y nefoedd wen,
  Cydgrynodd seiliau'r
      ddaear faith.

Gofphenodd dalu perffaith Iawn,
Ynillodd fuddugoliaeth lawn;
  Ac nid oes angenrheidrwydd mwy
Am waed nac aberth o un rhyw,
Dros fyth i'n dwyn i heddwch Duw,
  Ond rhinwedd glān ei farwol glwy'.

Gorphenodd ein iachawdwr cu,
Orchfygu nerthoedd uffern ddu;
  Ei waed a roddodd had y wraig
'Rhyn a 'sgrinfenwyd ddaeth i ben,
Pan y dolefodd ar y pren,
  Pan ddrylliodd Iesu ben y ddraig.

Pan gilio goleuadau'r nen,
Pan dreulio oesau'r byd i ben,
  Bydd melys glod i'r Iesu glān;
Ei waith gorphenol yn ein lle,
A haeddiant ei gyfryngdod e',
  Fydd testyn ein tragwyddol gān.

(The finished work of Christ)
Under the heavy pains of sad death,
On the wood of the cross
    was the beloved Christ,
  He finished his wonderful work:
When he bowed his head,
The dawn of the bright heavens blackened,
  The foundations of the vast earth
      shook together.

He finished paying a perfect Satisfaction,
He won a full victory;
  And there is no more need
For blood or sacrifice of any kind,
Ever to bring us to the peace of God,
  But the holy merit of his mortal wound.

Our dear saviour finished
Overcoming the forces of black hell;
  His blood granted to the seed of the woman,
What was written which came to fulfilment,
When he cried out on the tree,
  When Jesus smashed the head of the dragon.

When the lights of the sky retreat,
When the ages of the world are spent,
  There will be sweet praise to Holy Jesus;
His finished work in our place,
And the merit of his mediation,
  Shall be the theme of our eternal song.
tr. 2016 Richard B Gillion
