Un sylfaen fawr yr Eglwys

The Church's one Foundation

1,2,(3),4,5.
Un sylfaen fawr yr Eglwys
  Yr Arglwydd Iesu yw,
Ei greadigaeth newydd
  drwy ddŵr a gair ein Duw;
Ei briodasferch sanctaidd
  O'r nef i'w cheisio daeth,
Â'i waed ei hun fe'i prynodd
  A'i bywyd ennill wnaeth.

Fe'i plannwyd drwy'r holl wledydd,
  Ond un, er hyn i gyd,
Ei sêl, un ffydd, un Arglwydd,
  Un bedydd drwy'r holl fyd;
Un enw glân folianna,
  Un ymborth ynddi gawn,
gan gyrchu at un gobaith
  O ddoniau'r nef yn llawn.

Mae yma'n nod i ddirmyg
  A'i phen dan lawer ton,
Gan heresïau'n ysig
  A sismau'n clwyfo'i bron;
Ond gweddi gwylwyr Seion
  Ddyrchafa'n gryf - "Pa hyd?"
A ber fydd nos wylofain,
  Gorfoledd leinw'r byd.

Yng nghanol gorthrymderau
  A thwrf rhyfeloedd mawr
Hiraethu mae am weled
  Tangnefedd ar y llawr,
Nes troi ei ffydd yn olwg
  I lonni'i llygaid prudd,
A'r Eglwys filwriaethus
  Un ogoneddus fydd.

Ond yma mae mewn undeb
  Â Duw, y Tri yn Un,
Mewn dirgel, hardd gymundeb
  Â seintiau'r nef ynglŷn:
O deulu glân a dedwydd!
  O Arglwydd, nertha ni
I esgyn gyda'r Iesu
 I'th bresenoldeb di.

Tôn: Aurelia (1864 S S Wesley 1810-76)

The one great foundation of the Church
  Is the Lord Jesus,
His new creation
  Through water and the word of our God;
His holy bride
  From heaven to seek her he came,
With his own blood he bought her
  And her life he did win.

She is planted throughout all the lands,
  But one, for all this,
Her seal, one faith, one Lord,
  One baptism throughout the whole world;
One holy name she praises,
  One food in her we may have,
By gathering to one hope
  Full of the gifts of heaven.

Here she is the target of contempt
  With her head under many a wave,
By heresy shaken
  With schisms wounding her breast;
But the prayer of Zion's watchmen
  Rises strongly - "How long?"
And short shall be the night of weeping,
  Jubilation shall fill the world.

Amidst oppressions
  And the din of great wonders
She is longing to see
  Peace on the earth,
Until her faith turns to sight
  to cheer her doleful eyes,
And the Church militant
  Shall be glorious.

But here she is in union
  With God, the Three in One,
In a mysterious, beautiful communion
  Connected with the saints of heaven:
O holy and happy family!
  O Lord, strengthen us
To ascend with Jesus
  To Thy presence.
tr. 2008 Richard B Gillion
The Church's one foundation
  Is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is His new creation
  By water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her
  To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her
  And for her life He died.

She is from every nation,
  Yet one o'er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation,
  One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses,
  Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses,
  With every grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder
  Men see her sore oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder,
  By heresies distressed:
Yet saints their watch are keeping,
  Their cry goes up, "How long?"
And soon the night of weeping
  Shall be the morn of song!

'Mid toil and tribulation,
  And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
  Of peace forevermore;
Till, with the vision glorious,
  Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
  Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union
  With God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
  With those whose rest is won,
O happy ones and holy!
  Lord, give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly,
  On high may dwell with Thee:
