Wele Iachawdwr dynolryw

Behold the Saviour of mankind

(Cariad Crist)
Wele Iachawdwr dynol-ryw,
  Wedi ei hoelio ar y pren,
Cariad barodd i Fab Duw,
  Yn dy le ogwyddo'i ben.

Clyw ef yn gruddfan ar y groes,
  Nes siglo cwrs naturiaet byd,
Colofnau'r ddaear tan ei loes,
  Yn gorfod plygu eu pennau 'nghyd.

Creigiau yn hollti gan ei boen,
  Rhwygo mae llen y deml fawr;
A chan ofidiau'r addfwyn Oen,
  Yr haelwen dêg a ddua'i wawr.

Gorphenwyd talu'r dyled mawr,
  Mae'r ffordd yn awr yn rhydd i'r ne',
Gwêl ef yn gwyro ein ben i lawr,
  Ymroi i farw yn dy le.

[Bechadur, gwêl ei ben i lawr,
   Mae gwedi marw yn dy le;
 Gorphenwyd talu'r ddyled fawr,
   Mae'r ffordd yn awr yn rhydd i'r ne'.]

Ar fyr tyrr
    gadwyn angau du
  I fynu daw o'r bedd i'r lan;
Fath boen a serch erioed ni fu,
  Yn ymddisgleirio dros y gwan.

Wele Iachawdwr dynolryw
  Yn dyoddef ar y groes;
A thros dy enaid euog di,
  Yn profi marwol loes!

Clyw ef yn gruddfan! plygu mae
  Cedyrn golofnau'r byd;
Rhwygo mae llen y deml fawr,
  Dirgryna'r creigiau 'nghyd.

"Gorphenwyd!"
    rhoddwyd iawn difai,
  "O derbyn f'ysbryd I,"
Medd Iesu pan ogwyddai'i ben,
  Ar fynydd Calfari.

Cyn hir fe dyr
    gadwyni'r bedd,
  Llewyrcha'n ddysglaer, gwn;
O Oen fy Nuw! fu 'rioed fath loes,
  Na chariad ail i hwn.

Tonau [MC 8686]:
Gloucester (Ravenscroft's Psalter 1621)
Silesia (A Kruger / F Filitz)

(The Love of Christ)
See the Saviour of human-kind
  Having been nailed on the tree,
'Twas love that caused the Son of God
  In thy place to incline his head.

Hear him groaning on the cross,
  Until the world's natural course shakes,
The pillars of the earth under his anguish
  Are forced to bow their heads together.

Rocks splitting by his pain,
  Rending is the great temple's curtain;
And by the gentle Lamb's griefs,
  The fair sunshine blackens its dawn.

Finished was the payment of the great debt.
  The way is now free to heaven,
See him bending his head down,
  Giving himself to die in thy place.

[Sinner, see his head down,
   He has died in thy place;
 Finished was paying the great debt,
   The way is now free to heaven.]

Shortly he shall break
    black death's chains
  Up he shall come from the grave again;
Such pain and passion never was
  Shining over the weak.

See the Saviour of humankind
  Suffering on the cross;
And for thy guilty soul,
  Experiencing mortal agony!

Hear him groaning! Bending are
  The firm columns of the world;
Rending is the curtain of the great temple,
  Earthquaking all the rocks.

"It is finished!"
    Given was the faultless satisfaction,
  "Oh receive My spirit,"
Said Jesus when he was bowing his head,
  On mount Calvary.

Before long he will break
    the chains of the grave,
  He will shine brightly, I know;
O Lamb of God, never was such agony,
  Nor love comparable to this.
tr. 2015,19 Richard B Gillion
(Love of Christ)
Behold the Saviour of mankind
  Nail'd to the shameful tree!
How vast the love that Him inclined
  To bleed and die for thee!

Though far unequal our low praise
  To Thy vast sufferings prove,
O Lamb of God, thus all our days,
  Thus will we grieve and love.

Hark, how He groans! while nature shakes,
  And earth's strong pillars bend;
The temple's veil asunder breaks,
  The solid marbles rend.

'Tis done! the precious ransom's paid,
  "Receive my soul," He cries;
See, how He bows his sacred head,
  He bows his head and dies.

But soon He'll break death's envious chain,
  And in full glory shine;
O Lamb of God! was ever pain,
  Was ever love like Thine?

Thy loss our ruin
    did repair;
  Death by death is slain;
Thou wilt at length exalt us where
  Thou dost in glory reign.
