Y mae Un uwch law pawb eraill

(One there is above all others)

1,2,3,(4,5);  1,2,4,5.
Y mae Un, uwch law pawb eraill
  Drwy'r greadigaeth faith i gyd,
Sydd yn haeddu Ei alw'n Gyfaill,
  Ac a bery'r un o hyd:
Brawd a anwyd ini yw
Erbyn c'ledi o bob rhyw.

Nis gall meithder ffordd,
    nac amser,
  Oeri dim o'i gariad Ef;
Mae Ei fynwes byth yn dyner,
  A'i gymdeithas byth yn gref;
Nis gall dyfroedd angeu llym
Ddiffodd ei angerddol rym.

Yn mha le y ceir, er chwilio,
  Neb yn caru fel Efe?
P'le mae'r cyfaill, er ein hachub,
  Ro'i ei fywyd yn ein lle!
Nid oes debyg iddo Ef
Drwy y ddaear faith a'r nef.

Pan fo pawb yn cefnu arnom
  Yn y dyffryn tywyll du -
Pan fo pob daearol undeb
  Yn ymddatod o bob tu,
Saif E'n ffyddlon y pryd hyn,
Ac a'n dwg yn iach drwy'r glyn.

A phan ymddangoso eilwaith,
  Yn ngogoniant mawr ei Dad,
Gyda'i holl angylion santaidd,
  Mewn anrhydedd a mawrhâd,
Fe geir gwel'd mai'r un fydd Ef,
Er myn'd heibio'r byd a'r nef.
faith :: fawr
Nis gall :: Ni all
ngogoniant mawr :: ngogoniant pur

There is One, above all others
  Throughout all the vast creation,
Who merits being called Friend,
  And shall continue the same always:
A brother who was born to us he is
Against hardship of every kind.

Neither the extent of the road,
    nor time, can
  Cool anything of His love;
His bosom is forever tender,
  And his company forever strong;
The waters of sharp death cannot
Extinguish his passionate force.

Where can be found, despite searching,
  Anyone loving like Him?
Where is the friend, who to save us,
  Would give his life in our place?
There is not like Him
Throughout the vast earth and heaven.

When all be turning their backs upon us
  In the dark, black vale -
When all earthly union be
  Unravelling on every side,
He will stand faithful at that time,
And bring us whole through the vale.

And when he appears a second time,
  In the great glory of his Father,
With all his holy angels,
  In honour and majesty,
It will be seen that He is the same,
Despite going through the world and heaven.
vast :: great
::
great glory :: pure glory

tr. 2015 Richard B Gillion

One there is above all others,
  Well deserves the name of Friend;
His is love beyond a brother's,
  Costly, free, and knows no end:
They who once His kindness prove
Find it everlasting love.

Which of all our friends,
    to save us,
  Could or would have shed their blood?
But our Jesus died to have us
  Reconciled in Him to God,
This was boundless love indeed;
Jesus is a Friend in need.

Men, when raised to lofty stations,
  Often know their friends no more;
Slight and scorn their poor relations
  Though they valued them before.
But our Saviour always owns
Those whom He redeemed with groans.

When He lived on earth abasèd,
  Friend of sinners was His name;
Now, above all glory raisèd,
  He rejoices in the same:
Still He calls them brethren, friends,
And to all their wants attends.

Could we bear from one another,
  What He daily bears from us?
Yet this glorious friend and brother,
  Loves us though we treat Him thus:
Though for good we render ill,
He accounts us brethren still.

O for grace our hearts to soften!
  Teach us, Lord, at length to love;
We, alas! forget too often
  What a Friend we have above:
But when home our souls are brought,
We will love Thee as we ought.
